McAuliffe to sign order restoring rights to 206,000 felons
Richmond Times Dispatch ^ | 04/22/2016 | JIM NOLAN

Gov. Terry McAuliffe this morning will sign an order that effectively restores the civil rights, including the right to vote, of more than 200,000 felons in Virginia.

The unprecedented move, expected to be announced at an 11 a.m. news conference on Capitol Square, marks a dramatic expansion of policy in restoring the right to vote, to sit on a jury, to serve in elected office or become a notary.

Today's order applies to nonviolent and violent felons - a significant departure from a policy embraced in recent years by Democrat and Republican governors to remove the societal obstacles felons face upon completing their sentences.

"Under the Constitution of Virginia, the governor has the authority to 'remove political disabilities consequent upon conviction' for felonies," according to a confidential draft of research for the order obtained by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

"Using this authority, the governor has issued an order restoring civil rights to a large number of Virginians currently disenfranchised for a felony conviction."

The order, effective today, applies to "any felon who has completed any term of incarceration and completed any period of supervised release, probation or parole, for any and all felony convictions."

Interesting that he trusts these people with the vote but not with a gun. I personally believe that anyone convicted of a single NON-VIOLENT felony, and who has had no trouble with the law for ten years since completion of their sentence should have ALL of their civil rights restored.

If I can’t trust you with a gun, then I can’t trust you with a vote. And vice versa.

Not good enough, McAwful.

You need to sign a bill that lets violent felons vote 25 times, non-violent felons vote 10 times, and deny the vote to people who have not been convicted of a felony.

While the knee-jerkers will go to town on you, let me state my agreement.

A person who has served his time should have all his rights restored, voting and gun rights included. The existence of a growing class of rump non-citizen citizens only further serves to detach the government from the will of the people and encourage it to proliferate even more laws to strip these rights.

If they’re rights, they’re rights. Citizens without rights are something no conservative should countenance.

Restoration of rights

Restores right to vote, sit on jury, hold public office, and serve as a notary public. It does not restore firearms rights. In 2015, Governor McAuliffe adopted a policy allowing individuals that have had their rights restored to have that restoration noted on their official criminal record if they choose. See https://governor.virginia.gov/newsroom/newsarticle?articleId=11651.

.... There is definitely a panic and rush to get Illegal Immigrants and the rights of Felons restored ASAP by the Obama administration for some reason.

It saddens me to see what has happened to Virginia over my life time. I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m from Northern Virginia. A small dairy farming community that has been dying for decades.

Someone asked me at the gas pump, before a snow was supposed to hit, how well Northern Virginians drive in the snow. I laughed and said, “Well, of the couple of dozen who grew up around here , we do OK. Everyone else is from somewhere else.” A little hyperbole, but he got the joke.

Just to get a jab in. Trump did donate handsomely to Terry.

There is a lot you can criticize about democrats but one thing you can’t say is that they aren’t consistent.

The democrat elites like Obama, McAuliffe, and Hillary who go easy on criminals also want to disarm the rest of us.

Every few years democrats stumble on a new way to thumb their noses at America and boost their election fraud at the same time.

The current fad is to let dangerous criminals and terrorists out of prison and roam free.

And vote.

These democrats know that they don’t have to live near or interact with the dangerous criminals and terrorists they release into the general population.

And they all have armed government security to protect them.

The hypocrites believe it is perfectly acceptable to extort tax money from us to pay for their armed security but unacceptable for us to own guns to protect ourselves from criminals and terrorists - both foreign and domestic, in and out of government.

Willing to bet MONEY that the right to keep and bear arms is NOT being restored for these felons. Chucky Schumer closed that “loophole” at the federal level years ago.

I’ve come to believe every citizen has and should not be prohibited from voting... even though it probably means they will use their vote in an opposite way that I would.

How is this an executive and not a legislative function? With the stroke of a pen, 1 man can create 200,000 new voters? My question is of course rhetorical, as I know the answer is we no longer have divided government or checks and balances at any level of government. The great American Constitutional system is dying in front of our eyes. It makes me sick. Both Dems and Republicans are responsible: Dems for agitating for this breakdown for decades and Republicans for being such spineless cowards and never standing up to the sleazeball Dems.

From the article:

“Research by the Weldon Cooper Center at the University of Virginia cited by the administration estimates that 1 out of every 5 African Americans in the voting-age population in Virginia are disenfranchised because of its law.”

Since when is the Clinton-crony governor able to legislate new state laws?

There should be a judge somewhere to invalidate this or put it on hold until past the election
