Trump: I would change GOP platform on abortion
CNN ^ | 04/21/16 | David Wright

Posted on 04/21/2016 10:32:44 AM PDT by writer33

Donald Trump said Thursday he would change the Republican Party platform's position on abortion to include exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

Trump made the remarks during a town hall on the "Today" show on NBC on Thursday morning when host Savannah Guthrie asked him about abortion exceptions.

"The Republican platform every four years has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child should not be infringed," Guthrie said. "And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the (abortion) exceptions that you have?"

"Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely," Trump said. "For the three exceptions, I would."

Currently, the Republican platform abortion policy reads: "We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

Trump is pulling the classic “Nixon”: Run right to win the primary and then run to the middle for the general.

Sorry Trumpkins. Enjoy your Romney 2.0.

I agree. Never mind independents, I think the majority of Republicans would recoil at a "real life" situation in which a woman they loved was forced to continue a pregnancy conceived by rape.

Similarly, I don't think a majority of Republicans feel a woman should be forced to continue a pregnancy that will kill her.

Incest is spoken of rarely, but I actually live near an area where it is disgracefully prevalent. A 12 year old girl impregnated by a retarded 17 year old brother... you're gonna make her carry it?

These are not easy situations in real life. On paper, there are easy logical answers. But not in real life.

No they didn’t, and that was with him supposedly espousing them. How much more should I expect from someone who doesn’t even claim to espouse them?

What’s wrong with the current platform?

THE SANCTITY AND DIGNITY OF HUMAN LIFE

Faithful to the “self-evident” truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children. We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or fund organizations which perform or advocate it and will not fund or subsidize health care which includes abortion coverage. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life. We oppose the non-consensual withholding or withdrawal of care or treatment, including food and water, from people with disabilities, including newborns, as well as the elderly and infirm, just as we oppose active and passive euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Republican leadership has led the effort to prohibit the barbaric practice of partial birth abortion, permitted States to extend health care coverage to children before birth. We urge Congress to strengthen the Born Alive Infant Protection Act by exacting appropriate civil and criminal penalties to health care providers who fail to provide treatment and care to an infant who survives and abortion, including early induction delivery where the death of the infant is intended. We call for legislation to ban sex-selective abortions – gender discrimination in its most lethal form – and to protect from abortion unborn children who are capable of feeling pain; and we applaud U.S. House Republicans for leading the effort to protect the lives of pain-capable unborn children in the District of Columbia. We call for a revision of federal law 42 U.S.C. 289.92 to bar the use of body parts from aborted fetuses for research. We support and applaud adult stem cell research to develop lifesaving therapies, and we oppose the killing of embryos for their stem cells. We oppose federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.

We also salute the many states that have passed laws for informed consent, mandatory waiting periods prior to an abortion, and health protective clinic regulation. We seek to protect young girls from exploitation through a parental consent requirement; and we affirm our moral obligation to assist, rather than penalize, women challenged by an unplanned pregnancy. We salute those who provide them with counseling and adoption alternatives and empower them to choose live, and we take comfort in the tremendous increase in adoptions that has followed Republican legislative initiatives.

Exactly. This will have zero effect on poll numbers or voting and will likely increase turnout and crossovers in the northeast.

Reagan was for the exceptions too.

Reagan was for the 'life of the mother' exception but NOT the rape & incest exceptions.

Cruz, Huckabee, Santorum, Carson were the only ones running this year that didn’t have exceptions for abortion. And not a one of them will ever see the inside of the White House. The GOP is scared they’ll be seen as hostile to women. If the GOP gives the nomination to Cruz, Hillary has one more thing to wrap around his neck as part of the war on women and the GOP could care less because Cruz has as much chance of beating Hillary Clinton in a general election as I have going to the moon.

[So let’s see, in the course of just a few minutes Trump managed to offend the people of North Carolina and anti-abortion advocates. Did he offend any other conservative demographic or did he just run out of time?]

Well, he also said that he supports raising taxes on the rich. He did not, however, define what he means by rich or why the rich should by an even larger share of taxes when they already pay most of them.

And here I thought I would have to wait until January 2017 for an “I told you so” avalanche aimed at Trump supporters.

I would have loved to see the odds in Vegas that it would take about a day after Trump was named the "presumptive nominee."

Some of us suggested there might be some buyers remorse after Trump got the nomination. We were derided as lyin, cheatin, nasty, scum.

But not to worry, at last we have secured tranny access to our daughter’s bathrooms.

And never fear, I still hate the establishment. I don’t see anyone I, as a conservative on social as well as fiscal matters, could vote for. We’re back to the thing that started all this, the “lesser of two evils” thing which was what so many of us were sick of in the first place.

They should just change it to, “If it’s the woman who wants the abortion, that’s ok. She’s innocent. No harm no foul. Let her have it.”

Ugh.

"... for rape, incest and the life of the mother."

How in the world does this justify murdering an unborn, innocent person?

Nothing as a position paper. But as a template for real living for women in genuine distress, I don't think it is realistic.

See my #63.
