Trump: I would change GOP platform on abortion
CNN ^ | 04/21/16 | David Wright

Posted on 04/21/2016 10:32:44 AM PDT by writer33

Donald Trump said Thursday he would change the Republican Party platform's position on abortion to include exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

Trump made the remarks during a town hall on the "Today" show on NBC on Thursday morning when host Savannah Guthrie asked him about abortion exceptions.

"The Republican platform every four years has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child should not be infringed," Guthrie said. "And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the (abortion) exceptions that you have?"

"Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely," Trump said. "For the three exceptions, I would."

Currently, the Republican platform abortion policy reads: "We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

a candidate’s commitment to the cause of life is very relevant to the all important supreme court nominations that he may be called upon to make. waffling on life issues gives me pause.

Must be getting close to the general election.

...

This has been his position all along.

...

Correct. We have known about the exceptions for months. Nothing new here. Reagan would have been labeled as a “progressive” by Cruz supporters in both his first and second term. We need to fight abortion AFTER illegals are gone, 3rd world immigration is banned, and we have national borders.

Yes and once again Trump sticks his foot in this mouth. He does not clearly understand the GOP platform on Right to Life. The pregnant woman and her baby both have a right to life and both must be considered in medical decisions. Basic triage. The GOP platform addresses what is considered direct intent. If the direct intent is to abort the child to save the mother, then that is against the platform. If the direct intent is to save both lives and the child dies as a result of life saving surgical procedures that is acceptable according to the platform.

I just posted a 2015 article...Ted supported “life of the mother” exception...at the least

That's also called "self-defense". I know of many women who would risk their own lives to bring their child into the world. But I don't know of any law or moral code that REQUIRES a woman to do so. (Now an exception for "the health of the mother" is an entirely different thing...)

Only a small percent of the population is against early abortion in case of rape or incest...a very small percentage.

Even Dr. Carson addressed the mother’s life exception, and with modern medicine it’s really not even an issue anymore.

If you go back and back and research their platform, they are simply silent on any exceptions....and they say so directly.

"...exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother..."

Rape: Ethyl Water's white mother was raped by a black man when she was a teenager. Ethyl, who became a world renowned Gospel singer, was the baby that was not killed just because her mother was raped.

The reason "for the life of the mother" exception would kill many innocent children.

Beethoven was almost aborted, it was recommended to his mother that she should do so.

Here is a List of some other people whose names will be recognized that almost were killed. Tim Tebow, Celine Dion and Nick Cannon are examples.

Pregnant women who wish to kill their babies could get a waiver because they were severely depressed and claim they would kill themselves if they were forced to keep her baby.
Surely there would be many other ways to use this exception.

Even for incest there is no reason to kill the innocent victim.

Look at the British Monarchy, they have survived generations of incest or so it has been reported.

Trump needs to be educated on things of this manner. I know of at least one strong Christian on his staff.

Sadly, no - this is just a small foretaste of what we will see from the real Donald Trump if he gets the nomination.

He’s already back away from his paying off the debt in 8 years all without touching entitlements. Although, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and just say he was tired. ;)

I liked his original statement of throwing woman in jail who have illegal abortions if illegal. But you guys thought that was to strict. Basically you are never happy just like liberals. Always in perpetual outrage.

Of course the doctor performing the abortion walks, being a businessman and all, and now he's apparently not going to throw women who get abortions for the three magic reasons in jail, but no doubt his backers will have excuses for those as well. But hey, the day is young. Plenty of time for Trump to change his position to the left on any number of issues.

These stupid people are too busy running with Alinsky tactics and calling people liars.

I said I will vote for Trump if he wins the nod. If in the course of the general run up he comes out for abortion, amnesty, or weakening the 2nd amendment I am out. Those are my 3 hard lines. He has already put a hole in my dike with his raising taxes BS.

Currently, the Republican platform abortion policy reads: “We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.”

This is their position? Who knew?

1.5 million innocent people are killed yearly in this country. What has any republican done about it?

What has Ted Cruz’s GOP done? Fully funded the murder of those of babies.

Ugh - please dispense with the Reagan analogies.

The exceptions aren't the issue here - it's Trump's ability to change on the fly so he went from pro-abortion, not willing to stop partial birth abortion, to being pro-life, to punishing women to these exceptions.

Then Gov Reagan legalized abortion before the Supreme Court did. So hypocrite much?

1) I do not agree with him on this position.

2) I have voted for probably a hundred Republicans who held the identical position since gaining the age of majority.

And I’m sure just about all of you have too.

Just four years ago, this very site was jam-packed with posters noisily championing someone with the exact same "severely conservative" position.

Many of the exact same ones making showy, headlong dives toward the fainting couch right now, in fact.

BUMP

So far today this has been Trump on the issues:

1) Pro-dudes in women’s restrooms with your wives, moms, sisters, and daughters.

2) Raise taxes on the “rich.”

3) Amend the GOP platform on abortion to be pro-killing.

Which party is he running for the nomination of again?

Trumps the best conservative that can win the presidential election.

That is like saying that the Capitals are the best Canadian team that can win the Stanley Cup.

He may be the most conservative liberal that can win the presidential election, but I have sincere doubts that he is even a liberal conservative.
