WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on campaign 2016 (all times Eastern):

8:15 a.m.

Donald Trump says he believes transgender people should be able to use whichever bathroom they choose.

Speaking at a town hall event on NBC's "Today" Thursday, Trump said North Carolina's so-called "bathroom law," which directs transgender people to use the bathroom that matches the gender on their birth certificates, has caused unnecessary strife.

“Cruz said laws requiring people to use the restroom that corresponds to the sex on their birth certificate “

Well, wait. You've twice said on this thread that Cruz would take the same position as Trump if asked. You were wrong. And is he going to post feds outside of bathrooms to check them?

No, and that's not the point. The BC just establishes the legal basis for prosecution if the cops answer a complain from a citizen about a man in the women's room.

Absent the BC law, a hairy chested hetero pervert can walk into a women's room, and there's not a damn thing the cops or the women can do about it. The BC law gives the women the right to complain, and the cops will have the knowledge that the obvious guy they're arresting will have a BC that proves him as such, and he can be prosecuted.

But congrats for adopting so readily the left's ridiculous strawman argument that "we can't have cops checking everyone's BC before they can use a bathroom." Never the point, but a nice distraction.

The GOPe and their friends are dancing in the streets now.

From the number of post put up on FreeRepublic I would believe they think they have the silver bullet that will end the TRUMP march to victory.

Ho Hum!

Like all the “silver bullets” before this one, it does not matter. Perhaps this is what is driving the anti-Trump faction crazy.

It’ll probably get walked back, at least partway. But it wasn’t his inner liberal that came out, it was his inner businessman.

I actually watched the interview, and I bet I’m one of very few commenting here who did.

What he said was that the NC law created a problem where it didn’t need to—and that problem is costing the state big money. It’s costing businesses in the state and will end up costing the taxpayers, because the government butted in where it didn’t need to.

He also said that going down the path of legislating bathrooms is only going to create more problems and expense for small businesses that are already stressed and can’t afford to have a third bathroom for transgendered people. Which is where all this is going to lead if the government doesn’t get out of it.

Personally, I think the government needs to stay out of the bathroom business, unless they’re talking about government buildings. Other than that, it is up to the individual who owns the building to decide what kind and how many bathrooms he/she will have and how they’re to be used. In turn, it is then the right of individuals to decide if they want to frequent that building or not.

I wonder where Kasich stands on thus? Bet he and Donald both favor letting transgenders hang out in bathrooms with our little girls and ladies. Sick!!!!

Here is the actual video with his words. Go to 15:13 to see the LGBTXYZ question (Its right after the question where he told the anchor baby that he would deport her parents and they would have to come back into the country legally)

"That’s totally FUBAR. He just screwed himself with that unthinkable and stupid remark. Politicians should avoid the gay lesbian transgendered weirdo sick issues."

I agree 100%... but that's not going to stop me from voting for him.

Does anyone know the history of restrooms? When did separate restrooms appear?

Did places always have restrooms?

Here lately, the push seems to be to allow males in women’s restrooms/dressing rooms, using the transgender angle, but a totally separate issue.

No, it is not a "totally separate issue." It is actually the exact same issue. If a person can define their gender however they want, using a purely subjective standard, then it is virtually impossible to arrest and prosecute a man for entering a women's bathroom, shower facility, or changing room. All he has to do is claim that he "identifies as a woman", and the headache of prosecution and proving that he really doesn't identify that way makes it not worthwhile to arrest him at all.

Of course, mainly due to the fact that he did not say what people think he said.

Tell us what Congress has done to stop this freight train.

Nothing at all

“Leave it like it is.”

Sound familiar?

And is he going to post feds outside of bathrooms to check them?

Right. Now I understand your position. Standing for decency and the right to privacy doesn't matter because there is no way to enforce it. It's just like your position on abortion....there's no need to aggressively defend the right to life because politicians, especially republicans, have done nothing to change the laws for decades.

You stand for nothing so you've fallen for the addled views of the social warriors. Again, what is wrong with you?

I would agree, but just as important is what has the GOPe sold us?

What has it done that is different than, “Leave it like it is?”

Congress has done nothing.

It is “our” Congress.

I listened to it again and I agree, I think he meant to “leave it as it was before”. He just seems to not know about the Charlotte ordinance that triggered all of this.

We all want it to be like it was BEFORE the CHARLOTTE ordinance. Nobody had any problems or complained back then and now we have a bunch of strife!

I went to that point of the video, watched it, and he explicitly said that NC should leave it "the way it is", i.e., trannies able to use women's restrooms, because "it causes to much strife" otherwise. I'd encourage everyone else to watch that video for themselves.

He's clearly taken the nonconservative position on this. And in fact, his "there's too much strife" actually is about the worst possible defense of his position, because it essentially means we should kowtow everytime the leftists complain or try to boycott. It completely undercuts what I think was his best moment -- the response to what happened in Chicago. Now, when the shoe isn't on his foot, he's blaming the people who are on the right side of an issue for the "strife" caused by them standing by their position.

Agreed. But if we lose the culture, nothing else matters. Society is destroyed by compromising the culture. This is why we look at illegal immigration the way we do and why nothing gets done about it. Trump talks about dealing with it, but it’s all talk.

I’m just gonna sit back and laugh and at all the damn fool trumpeters. We’ve been warning about this for months. ALL the signs are there and have been there all along...just gotta be willing to see. This, my foolish trumpeter friends, is only the beginning. Y’all have made this bed...lie in it. Downside...you will have taken the Republic with you. Enjoy!
