Ted Cruz Now Says 'We Are Headed to a Contested Convention'

Sen. Ted Cruz for the first time said he believes the Republican Party is headed to a contested convention.

Cruz had previously called a contested convention likely and that it seemed the party was heading in that direction. But after a disappointing third-place loss in New York Tuesday, the Texas Republican is no longer saying he plans to beat front-runner Donald Trump at the ballot box.

"We are headed to a contested convention,” Cruz said in an interview with Philadelphia talk-radio personality Chris Stigall this morning. “At this point, nobody is getting 1,237. Donald is going to talk all the time about other folks not getting to 1,237; he’s not getting there either. None of us are getting to 1,237.”

And he’s right about one thing. After the New York primary, it is now mathematically impossible for Cruz to clinch the Republican nomination using bound or pledged delegates before the July convention in Cleveland.

He is digging. He is destroying his career. No one will do business with a man who exhibits poor judgement.

if he bowed out gracefully, people would respect that posture.

How many more votes did she get than Ted?

You realize that NY has almost 6 million registered democrats and under 3 million registered Repiblicans, Hillary was running against one old loon ( who captured virtually the entire state except for major metro area) and Trump running against 2 spoilers backed by his own party

Oh and even with all that baggage Trump got over 400,000 more republican votes than Romney got in the 2012 NY primary and more votes than McCain and Romney combined in the 2008 NY primary

Trump is doing wonderful things for the Republican Party

If only the party would embrace and support and advise him, imagine what we could be doing

The delegates, not the people, choose the candidate. Each state organization is basically independent of the NRP. There is a national elite, meaning the people based in Washington, and local elites based in the several states. The elites, and/or activists decide how the delegates are to be chosen. You seem to want pure democracy, which is not how our system of government is organized. We have a form of mixed government with a senatorial class in each state and a popular class. The two overlap. If the senatorial class seems to become a caste then we get restive, and someone like Trump or Cruz can rise to challenge them. At the presidential level, that person will always be a member of the senatorial class. Of the candidates, only Carson and Bernie are not members of the senatorial class.

Ted, you’re headed out the door, that’s the only place you’re headed for.

“a united Democrat Party AND a united Republican Party for all the marbles. The Uniparty will crush him.”

Trying to find the distinction between what you mention and what is happening now. Is the GOP going after Hillary at all yet? The GOP is already running against Trump. And? They are losing. Badly. First they wanted Jeb, didn’t work.

Then they wanted Marco and got Romney up front to press that.Didn’t work.

Lately they’ve been using Cruz with his tacit permission.
Not working.

All the GOP establishment has left is sleazy slimy backroom deals and tricks. Kasich has no traction.

So who in their right mind would be afraid of the big, bad GOP blockheads?

What “help” are the loser elites with their sore egos going to bring to the table? They don’t know WTH to do with Trump! It’s not for him to bow to them,,it’s for the GOP to WAKE UP and realize we have a new era and the pigs at the trough in DC better shape up or they will be out!

See, that’s what Trump brings to the picture that Cruz cannot.

The GOP isn’t backing Cruz because they like him. They are backing Cruz because he is strong anti-Trump. Cruz will be tossed aside if not today, then very soon.

No, he is following the new adage: “ It’s all about me”

Trump is not going to win in NY unless Hillary gets indicted or has a stroke.

Trump is NO conservative. He’s a self-dealing charlatan and he’s got a lot of fall-for-anything chump types fooled.

Opinions evolve as candidates are vetted, it's just some of you can't stand seeing Ted Cruz vetted for some reason. I think these links from our own FR, Trump that.

I was told yesterday that Trump is a liberal Democrat. My reply:

A FReeper discussion on the history of Trump's conservative pro-America positions

As you can see, opinions evolve as candidates are vetted but some of you fail to see all the vetting that has gone on here, including your own candidate, the sleazy lawyer type, Ted Cruz.

He can take his call for unity and stuff it where the sun doesn’t shine. Cruz disgusts me.

OMG, you have got to be kidding. Each state has their own process, and as you may have noticed, those processes are not at all alike.

Plus we only had 36 states by the end of Lincoln’s presidency and AQ/ISIS/hate-America communists were not breathing down our neck.

Times have changed drastically. Maybe the process needs to keep up?

Trump is a winner . Cruz is becoming intolerable.
