Plumes of smoke rose some 100 meters into the sky, according to local media and videos captured by witnesses. The eruption of Mt. Aso, located in southern Japan, was recorded at around 11:30pm GMT Friday.

Since small eruptions had been recorded at Mt. Aso even before the series of deadly quakes hit the area on Thursday and Friday, the Japanese Meteorological Agency has reportedly decided to keep the alert level at 2 on a scale of 1-5.

I think earthquakes and volcanoes go together.

In the weeks preceding the Mount St. Helens eruption, there were thousands of earthquakes.

Can’t imagine what would it be like to have both a massive earthquake and a huge volcano erupt at the same time...................

The day the tsunami hit after the Japanese earthquake was at Kona. We traveled to Hilo and were greeted by an earthquake. As we toured the volcanoes that day by helicopter were reminded how many were long overdue for major eruptions. It’s an exciting place to live ! Earthquakes, tsunami, earth quakes, and the kitchen in the restaurant we ate in caught fire that night. A day entranced in memory

Picture the landslide off of the north side face of Mt Aso.

There is MAJOR concern that Mount Aso--which has one of the largest volcano calderas in the world--is about to erupt on a BIG way based on the earthquake activity near Kumamoto. The possibility of an eruption at least as big as what happened at Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991 may not be far-fetched--and I wouldn't even completely rule out an eruption with the same ash output as Krakatoa in 1883, either.

“What are those buildings?”

I was watching some of the video and I think that’s a school right near the landslide.

ah memories of the vulcaphoonquake of 1992. Was on a frigate going into subic in the PI got turned back for an incoming Typhoon - afterwards pulled into Subic just in time for Mt Pinatubo to go off with quakes post and prior to eruption. 3 days of firehose washing ash off the deck in OBAs.
