The Illinois Senate is considering a bill that will tax drivers 1.5 cents per mile they drive, because of a loophole in the states current gas taxation law that excuses owners of electric cars, starting July 2017.
If all the cars were electric, there would be no money for the roads, Illinois State Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago, told the Daily Herald, a suburban Chicago paper. The Prius owners are the reason we need this bill.
The bill, which Cullerton is spearheading, said car owners or lessees can choose one of three ways by which the state will measure mileage. Two of those ways involve a device within the car, which will either track GPS location and stop measuring when the driver leaves public roads or monitor odometer readings. The third option is a flat tax, where a driver would pay $450 each year, the equivalent of driving 30,000 miles on the 1.5 cent tax, and not be monitored.
Illinois drivers are already plagued with the second-highest gas prices in the nation, due to heavy taxing at the city and state levels, so Cullertons bill will include a tax refund for drivers to ensure they arent double taxed.
The bill will also create the Illinois Road Improvement and Driver Enhancement Commission for the purpose of administering the conditions of the bill, and create an advisory board for the I-RIDE Commission. According to the Illinois Policy Institute, the chairman of the commission will receive an annual salary of $18,000 and the four other members will receive a salary of $15,000.
The administration of such a large-scale tracking and monitoring system seems a behemoth task with every possibility of going awry, considering the layers of bureaucracy that would be needed to administer such a program, writes Hilary Gowins, of IPI, a research and educational organization aimed at promoting personal freedom and prosperity in Illinois.
10.4 million cars are registered in Illinois, and, due to the tremendous financial undertaking this bill promises, Republican state senators, such as Sen. Matt Murphy, R-Palatine, have already expressed criticism at the current state of the bill.
This one will probably require a thorough vetting, Murphy told the Daily Herald.
Which will be either removed in committee or amended out later.

These new tax bills always come with more government. The cost of these new positions will wipe out a good portion of the revenue raised and will require the 1.5 cent tax per mile to be increased. Look for 5 or 10 cent tax per mile in the near future.
This completely illustrates that liberalism is a mental illness.
EXPECTED - just surprised it took so long.
Start by warming the pot a bit. 1.5 cents per mile, TODAY, independent of any other factor.
But tomorrow is when the fun begins - now that you’re tracking drivers, you can charge them by WHERE THEY DRIVE, WHEN THEY DRIVE, WHAT THEY DRIVE, and for even more fun, you can make ‘adjust the rate’ to be based on income.
...and don’t laugh, you can almost bet that is right around the corner.
Horseshit. They need the bill because these oafs can't manage tax money, steal it, waste it and give it away for votes to keep them in office.
Me likey very much! :0)
Should five per cent appear too small Be thankful I don't take it all Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
If you drive a car, I'll tax the street If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat If you get too cold I'll tax the heat If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet
Taxman! Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
Don't ask me what I want it for (Aahh Mr. Wilson) If you don't want to pay some more (Aahh Mr. Heath) Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Now my advice for those who die Declare the pennies on your eyes Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
And you're working for no one but me Taxman!
The Beatles/George Harrison.
I used to worry about being tracked with transponder, but that ship has sailed- most cars are tracks me with license plate readers.
If everybody rode bicycles there would be no money for roads.
If I remember correctly, it was the League of American Wheelmen, LAW, who in the late 1880’s to the mind 1930’s who pushed for local, state and possibly Federal funding to turn America’s dirt roads into ‘modern’ macadam roads for the express purpose of -— Bicycling. It was much easier to peddle a bike on a smooth road instead of dirt or gravel.
I did a quick search and here are some interesting links.

And they overlay the GPS speed measurement and speed limits and start handing out tickets in 3,2,1.
Somebody has to pay the ridiculous pensions of the city employees in Chicago. Might as well be the folks downstate and in the suburbs.
It will not work right but you will have no recourse. Also, ask who will be exempt; listen carefully.
Somebody has to pay for the public employee’s pensions, especially now that a judge has ruled it cannot be reformed.
I know some people that bought prius, and one of the selling points for them was how much they would save on gas. Save money and the environment, what could go wrong?
You can thank Obama and the Federal government for this. Such measures would not be necessary, if the Feds weren’t constantly foisting hybrids and electric cars on us through tax incentives.
That may have already happened.
They will all move to Texas and turn it blue.
“I have a very simple solution to this problem: every two years 10 politicians are chosen at random, put up against a wall...”
What about the stupid morons that voted the crook into
office in the first place?
I’d say shoot them as well, but I’d much rather their foot
be nailed to the floor to keep them in Ilinoids instead of
moving to places like Texas and screwing it up as well.
Keep your commie liberals at home and away from Texas.
My question is, if you pay the $450.00 do they remove the taxes at the pump then? Or will we be double taxed and the electric people will then be only paying half of what we do?
Like I said before, the foisting of electric cars and hybrids by our Federal government (via tax incentives) is what makes this stuff seem necessary. Foist these cars onto the American people, make gas tax revenue generators unpalatable with the gas guzzler tax, and then whine and complain when gas tax revenues go down.
The article said something about a rebate for gasoline taxes.
