In a lengthy analysis of data provided by the Trump campaign, Washington Post writers David A. Fahrenthold and Rosalind S. Heiderman find that claimed charitable contributions by Donald Trump included no actual cash from his personal funds.
Since the first day of his presidential campaign, Donald Trump has said that he gave more than $102 million to charity in the past five years.
To back up that claim, Trump’s campaign compiled a list of his contributions — 4,844 of them, filling 93 pages.
But, in that massive list, one thing was missing.
Not a single one of those donations was actually a personal gift of Trump’s own money.
Instead, according to a Washington Post analysis, many of the gifts that Trump cited to prove his generosity were free rounds of golf, given away by his courses for charity auctions and raffles.
Another substantial source of charitable deductions was “land-conservation agreements to forgo development rights on property Trump owns.”
Both of these categories of charity are entirely legitimate. But they do not involve taking money out of a bank and giving to others. Instead, they forego opportunities to make money in the future, and generate tax deductions today.
Additionally, the $102 million figure includes donations by the Donald J. Trump Foundation, but as the reporters show, funding for that foundation has, in recent years, come from others.

If you give something of value to a charity then it is a “donation”. When I owned a pizza restaurant and gave pizza to the local veterans house did I donate or not?
Even the IRS was OK with that being a donation.
waaaa, he gave away goods and services and property! What a scrooge!
“Yeah, so? This pathetic hit piece ignores that businessmen (and women) often give charity through their businesses and other means not personal cash.”
In that case, they should not be bragging that “they give millions to charity.” Brag that “my corporations gave millions to charity.” You really don’t care who lies to you about what? Where will it stop?
they want to compare the cash that Hillary donated from the Clinton foundation to the goods and serviced donated by that miser Trump
He donated half the value of the NY veteran’s memorial, I believe
“If you give something of value to a charity then it is a donation. When I owned a pizza restaurant and gave pizza to the local veterans house did I donate or not?”
No. The corporation is a separate entity. When I write a check to Boy’s Town, it’s coming from me. If I donate a robot from my corporation to a local Trade School, it’s coming from the corporation. I know that you understand the difference and your pretzel logic is a bore.
Cruz don’t need no steenkin voters
He’ll just get the state parties to subvert the delegates with his loyalists
Ted Cruz for President: By One Means- Or Another
Makes you wonder what the number is for the klintoon foundation?
He wont release his tax returns until he’s the nominee and then its time for everyone to lay them on the table all at once, including the Clintons
He’s been audited for 12 years running. does anyone expect surprises?
Without Donald Trump there would be no Trump Foundation to hustle donations and dispense the charity.
I don't believe those wealthy donors - the "others" would have been so generous funding the "Thomas Lifson Foundation".
Those were the old rules...before the circus came to town.
I disagree. The Canadian four flusher has been busy stealing every delegate he and his buddies can get their slimy, Bush loving, GOP establishment hands on.
Very salient point here, ma’am. Just because it wasn’t to a 401(c)(3) or similar charity (and eligible to show up as a deduction on your taxes) doesn’t mean it doesn’t count!
So much small mindedness here.
when you’re the business owner... it’s ALL your personal money.
if he didn’t make the donation from the business, he would’ve taken it as a distribution.
get a clue
So, because of Trump over $100,000,000 in donations, goods and services went to charity and that is somehow a bad thing? How much went to charity because of Calgary Ted or Kasich in the last 5 years?
actually, i believe it was $45
“So much small mindedness here.”
Indeed. When I “give money to charity” it shows up on my taxes. When my company gives it to charity it shows on the company books. See how that works?
Now, if I say that “I gave to charity” what the company gave to Charity, am I giving people an accurate picture of me? But, if I say “I have directed my coporations” or My Corporations have donated...” does that make a difference in the way you perceive me? Yes. It does. Just stop trying to make us believe you do things you don’t, especially if the things you do are very good things. We don’t need to be relentlessly sold a different image. That’s how DC works now. I thought the Trump campaign and it’s supporters were against continuing that?
This is no small matter. And it’s not about the ends justifying the means. it’s about truth. I though we were all ready to be the kind of people and to back someone that can handle the truth?
Depends, again, on HOW you do it... the system is rigged to favor the 401(c)(3) modern kind of charity. If you feed the homeless (assuming they haven't banned that in your locale) you get ZERO tax write off.
Yours is not to reason why
Yours is but to agree or die.
