Exclusive: Blocking Trump could hurt Republicans in election - Reuters/Ipsos poll

(Reuters) - A third of Republican voters who support Donald Trump could turn their backs on their party in November's presidential election if he is denied the nomination in a contested convention, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The results are bad news for Trump's rivals as well as party elites opposed to the real estate billionaire, suggesting that an alternative Republican nominee for the Nov. 8 presidential race would have a tougher road against the Democrats.

"If it’s a close election, this is devastating news" for the Republicans, said Donald Green, an expert on election turnout at Columbia University.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted March 30 to April 8 asked Trump’s Republican supporters two questions: if Trump wins the most delegates in the primaries but loses the nomination, what would they do on Election Day, and how would it impact their relationship with the Republican Party?

Sixty-six percent said they would vote for the candidate who eventually wins the nomination, while the remaining third were split between a number of alternatives such as not voting, supporting a third-party candidate, and switching parties and voting for the Democratic nominee.

Meanwhile, 58 percent said they would remain with the Republican Party. Another 16 percent said they would leave it, and 26 percent said they did not know what they would do with their registration. The online poll of 468 Republican Trump supporters has a credibility interval of 5.3 percentage points.

>>I’m livid that Kasich stays in. I believe those are Trump votes.<<

That’s delusional, but it’s no surprise. Trump supporters have shown time and again that they will believe anything that will help Trump, including believing that he really meant the opposite of what he said on many subjects.

People need the borders secured, fencejumpers and job stealers shipped out, manufacturing and jobs brought back, and debt brought down.

And, IMHO, there is only one candidate that is willing to try to accomplish this.

You’re being rational. Stop that. It confuses Trump supporters. Not very nice at all.

My husband has been saying for the past couple of weeks that if Cruz is the republican nominee, he will not vote in this election.

He is absolutely, grimly determined about that.

And yet you think the GOP is going to let Trump be nominated? Who’s smoking that Colorado Gold?

Are you being paid to demoralize Trump supporters or are you dumb enough to think that tossing insults at said supporters will somehow cause then to vote for your guy?

It is possible the GOP ballot down candidates will be wiped out. And that is what scares the GOPe’s most.

It doesn't scare them at all, otherwise they wouldn't continue with this charade of a primary. This has been gong on for years but the internet is finally allowing people to actually see who is in charge and it ain't us.

It’s still winnable. It will become unwinnable the moment they start voting on the second ballot.

Why? They do this every election. They figure that in the end, people will vote against the Democrat, no matter who the Republican candidate is. Either that, or they don’t really care if Hillary is president. Then then can send out those fundraising letters trying to scare people into donating to the Republican Party. I’m sick of all of it. Politics is sleazy.

Yep, all the way down to local. It would hurt the “party” and I would hope so.

There are more people available to vote on a Saturday than on a Tuesday, which is the day of the week when many primaries are held. People who work in hospitals, cops, fire departments, military, all work on Tuesdays also, not only Saturdays, as you implied. As Mr. Spock would say, your point is illogical.

And, as a matter of fact, turnout for the Kansas caucus in 2016 shattered all previous records. There were not just a few people who voted, as you contend. So your point is factually incorrect as well. What is your next "point"?

Here’s another headline for you. “Nominating Trump Could Hurt Republicans in Election”.

And global warming already has New York under water.

>Only a third would walk? I bet it would be more.<<

If you’re rational about it, you’d agree that it would be less, and probably a lot less.

It’s easy to say to a pollster that you’ll desert the party if you don’t get you way, but actually doing it when faced with Hillary is another matter entirely.

I am 90% certain that I won’t vote for President this year if my choices are Trump and Hillary (or will vote for whatever 3rd party choice I have) but there’s always that 10% chance I’ll change my mind. And I’m basing my choice on his despicable, buffoonish, behavior that I simply won’t be a party to putting into the Presidency, not on his policies.

If Trump were to really do what he says he’ll do there isn’t a lick of difference between Cruz and him on most major issues, except that Cruz will actually act in the manner he indicates, whereas Trump could revert to form.

If he gets 90-95 % would Kasich’s delegates get him all the way there?

How long will a country of 325 million be made to heel by nine robed tyrants?

Until CIVICS is taught again in elementary schools, and more intensively in high schools.

Americans don’t understand how our government is supposed to work, and that it works for THEM. We think we are serfs and are treated accordingly by our supposed servants.

A President Trump could use his bully pulpit to insist on American government being taught and discussed at school.

Trump from anything. The same rules apply to him as to everyone else. I know the Trump Humpers don’t like that.

If it were Trump doing this against Cruz you would be outraged and you know it, so does everyone else on this forum.
