You raise legitimate points. And as difficult as it may be for other posters to believe, I (along with my best FR brother StephenJohnBanker) originally supported Cruz before Trump got into the race.
However as time went on, cracks began to appear in what was initially a rock solid conservative appearance, and Cruz began to make poor calls in judgment (bringing on that lunatic Glenn Beck was a major error), and turning his rallies into something approaching an evangelistic tent-revival show might have thrilled the little old ladies in tennis shoes carrying Bibles, but that is NOT going to bring him crossover votes from the secular 'not-so-religious' crowd in a general election contest.
Cruz will be painted first as a religious extremist by the 'RATS, and second he'll be smeared as a far right political extremist, and that tactic has already been unleashed at a low level online, they're drawing parallels between Cruz and Senator Joe McCarthy, and while I (like the majority of FReepers I believe) think Joe McCarthy is an absolute American patriot, I doubt that in this day and age (after having his name improperly attached to the worst political behavior), that he could get elected to ANY office, and that is what awaits Cruz IF he somehow gains the GOP nomination (something I doubt is going to happen), here is the picture the 'RATS area already pushing:
The facts are, Cruz IS a career politician and the voting public wants an outsider, not an insider and Cruz has proven that is exactly what he is.
Good points, mk. They will definitely smear him over his facial and vocal similarity to Senator McCarthy (a true American hero) and they can depend on their own ignorance as well as the ignorance of the American people to believe every lie ever told about McCarthy.
Chris Matthews has already started down that road. For now, most are holding their fire.
