Saw him perform with Marty Robbins, Merle, a great fiddle player as well along with writing some of the greatest country songs ever. IMHO, there are not many who wrote songs the caliber of “I’m a Lonesome Fugitive” and many others. “Turn me loose” and so on.

Farewell Merle. Bon voyage. I hope you’re in a better place and reunited with those who’ve gone before. You were always one of my favorites, and I miss you.

Swingin’ Doors, yes, Emmylou sang it too along with many others.

“I made the prison band” was written by Tommy Collins; but Haggard’s version is great, that’s the Bakersfield sound as was Tommy Collins too:

The song is a bit of a hoot; the prisoner has to put off his escape because he made the prison band, a lesser known song.

Merle was in prison and pardoned by? Not sure who, Gov. Reagan?

He did a good imitation of Johnny Cash too.

Guess we can like all kinds of music and Hag, lol. Actually, for the last number of years, I’ve been a jazz guy. But I still do enjoy classic country music (1940s and 50s through 1970s and 80s).

Living-Willie Nelson is 82, Kris Kristofferson is 79, Glen Campbell is 79.

Dead-Merle, Waylon, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and maybe a couple of others, there is a passing generation of great C&W - popular music stars.

All born in the 1930s.

Dismissive? What a bunch of crap, he was great to his audience. I’ve seen him live 6 times over the course of 30 years, he was always great and never stoned. Well, not that you’d notice anyway.

Thanks for the good times and memories, Merle.
