(NBC) - Donald Trump says he regrets retweeting an unflattering photo of the wife of rival Ted Cruz, a rare move for the Republican front-runner more known for his boasts than backtracking.
"Yeah, it was a mistake," Trump told New York Times.
"If I had to do it again, I wouldn't have sent it."
The retweet set off a war of words between the two candidates, and gave fresh fuel to Democratic candidates and other critics who marveled at a Republican presidential race that had descended into a fight over the candidates' wives.
Trump retweeted the photo compilation showing an unflattering picture of Heidi Cruz and his own wife, Melania, after he accused Cruz of being behind or at least knowing about an ad that featured an old picture of Melania Trump posing nude for GQ magazine.
Cruz has denied any involvement in the ad, which was shared online. Cruz scolded Trump after the retweet, admonishing the businessman: "Donald, real men don't attack women."

Cruz is not a conservative, he was for “legalization of illegals” (amnesty) until Trump showed that position unpopular with the voters. He was for TPA/TPP until he realized that was unpopular with the voters. He was against any actions to punish China for currency manipulation until he realized that was unpopular with the voters. Cruz will do or say anything to win. Cruz has no principles, he is driven only by personal ambition.
Or not do something in the case of defending family values in the huge Lawrence v. Texas sodomy case. Cruz took a powder on that one afraid he might get some homo fudge on his fingers. Now sodomy is legal in all 50 states. Thank you Ted Cruz.
Ted Cruz is a bought and paid for climbing career politician. Nothing more or less.

Uh, no. Regret is not the same as humility. He owes Heidi Cruz (at how it affected her) an apology. He expressed regret (at how it affected himself) to the NY Times.
Show me one time Trump has disavowed anything!!He did not actually say he was wrong for posting the picture....just he regrets it....after his polls started to tank!!
Honest to goodness I saw this elsewhere yesterday. The whole thing was completely juvenile. I know people do things like this, I’ve seen a million unflattering images here of many people. But for a candidate to openly do this himself? Disturbing.
We’ve already had one permanent teenager in office for 7 years, we’ll be out of the fying pan into the fire if we elect another.
And no, I would never do this, but there are people who will vote for Hillary just because she actually does seem to be an adult. She’s a failed, awful, adult, but she don’t act like she’s 9 years old.
