Its the totally unthinkable question that Americans find themselves confronting this week: What would President Donald Trump do in a genuine national crisis?
After a series of overseas terror attacks and some startling statements about nuclear weapons and torture, the worlds attention has turned to Trumps foreign policyan area where he has few advisers, no experience and a tendency to fire off answers and deal with the fallout later. The reality of a Trump candidacy has begun to set in: If Trump is elected and a major national crisis hits, hell be the one with his hands on the button. Hell be at the head of the table in the Situation Room. His decisions would steer Americas immediate response and could set the course of American policy for years.
Whats hard to project with a normal politician is nearly impossible to guess with Trump. He has no foreign policy or public service experience, which means theres no official record to consult, and his public statements, while extreme, have been vague. The saber-rattling statements that excite his supporters also suggest he has disregard for linchpins of the global order like NATO, the Geneva Conventions and the hard-won global nuclear-weapons limits

Deter rational people maybe. But terrorists like the ones who conducted the 9/11 attacks are not rational people.
Results? Maybe that means the U.S. should keep its nose/influence/$$ OUT of (most) world affairs. Maybe, just maybe, we should be shoving govt, at ALL levels, back into the Constitutional box (where the job of President does....VERY little).
Anyone think the invasion of Europe wouldn’t be happening if the Dunce had destabilized the whole of the M.E.?
Or half the issue(s) around the globe because the U.S. has bases across the globe and more than willing to spill OUR blood, spend OUR $$?
Rattle the saber, then pussy-foot when called to action.
Course, NOBODY in D.C. cares about the Citizens enough to secure our own Southern border; let alone the Constitution to stop giving out taxpayer $$ they have no authority to give.

Back to point, I think DT WOULD halt all immigration and closed the border. I don’t think, if going to war, he would have saddled our troops w/ these ridiculous ROE, nor worried about ‘winning hearts and minds’. Damn certain he’d be calling Islam the ‘religion of peace’.
. . . . I suspect Tora Bora Crater would be visible from orbit.
LUNAR orbit. . .
Cruz would hold bi-partisan hearings, conferences and discussions to develop bi-partisan comprehensive attack response plans, and then consult with his donors to see if they're ok with the comprehensive attack response plan.
Then, he would propose a law suit against the terrorists, and build a legal team to see the case through the courts all the way up to the Supreme Court, where hopefully they will allow us to send the terrorists a nasty letter of rebuke.
Then, he would take 2 of his favorite mistresses on a vacation to Aruba.
Actions have consequences....unless Obama is POTUS, and our enemies have no worries.
Trump?
He will know...
1) WHO to bomb
2) WHEN to bomb
3) HOW to bomb.
If he needs help, his avisers will be around. As for his judgement regarding hires, he just hired Duncan Hunter, thereby confirming my belief in his wisdom, common sense.
Trump would have listened to the professional military and gone after their target set, with Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants being primary.
GW listened first to the neocon advisers that he surrounded himself with.
And they had a different agenda, spelled out when they were affiliated with the Project for the New American Century. And that agenda was one of remaking the Middle East with Iraq as their first experiment, despite the fact that Iraq wasn’t involved in 9-11 in any fashion.
“Perhaps Trump, who has made it clear he is reluctant to use ground forces, will call for carpet-bombing as a punishment for ISIS.”
Say what?
You obviously have not read the article. Too long for you?
Probably invade Iraq. Nah just kidding. No one would be that stupid.

“He will sue the terrorists.”
..thereby confirming my belief in his wisdom, common sense.
I am sure President Trump will surround himself with the best and the brightest advisors. I usually don’t think high of endorsements but Sen. Sessions sealed the deal for me.
What every other good leader would do.
Surround himself with the best people available and use them to coordinate, communicate and resolve issues. I think he may have done this type of thing before.
Politico guessing games by people not qualified to make the decisions themselves. Childishly ridiculous. “If” is for children.
Good points stephen....
I like the way you think.
As satisfying as that would have been in the short term, the downside would probably have been the sealing of death warrants for any Americans in those countries and would probably have started WWIII.
With who? Saudi? Egypt?
Weren’t those the main 9/11 countries?
15 of the 19 were Saudi
1 was Egyptian
1 was Lebanese
2 were UAE
Well I think he would consult with some of the excellent advisers he put in the proper positions. He certainly would not be consulting with politicians running around wringing their hands wailing, “ Why are they mad at us?” And then convening a committee to spend years regurgitating the information already known, such as they have been at war with us forever, we just refused to accept that fact.
I know one thing he WOULDN’T do. He wouldn’t be talking about Islam being a peaceful religion while holding back tears.
