Top Kasich aide: Romney tried to help broker backchannel with Cruz campaign
CNN ^ | 3/28/16 | Dana Bash

(CNN)In a storyline that could be ripped from a House of Cards script, John Kasich's campaign is looking to coordinate behind the scenes with Ted Cruz's in a mutual effort to deny Donald Trump enough delegates to win the Republican presidential nomination. They even tried to get 2012 nominee Mitt Romney to help broker it.

The only problem for team Kasich is that Team Cruz is not interested. Kasich adviser John Weaver told CNN that Romney urged Cruz campaign manager Jeff Roe to contact the Kasich campaign, but Roe has yet to do so. Roe told CNN he did speak with Romney, but declined to disclose details of their private conversation. A Romney spokeswoman also declined to comment on discussions he has had with the campaigns. What Roe did tell CNN was that the Cruz campaign has no desire to work with Kasich because they do not believe there is any advantage in it to the Texas senator. Cruz officials insist the Ohio governor is a spoiler -- plain and simple -- because they say he does not take votes from Trump, only Cruz.

Looks to me Kasich gets out soon. When he is whining to the press that someone needs to help him, it's all over.

In all Cruz’s anti trump daily nonsense, the funny thing is Kasick is going to knock Cruz out. Poetic justice. He will stop Cruz from winning Wisconsin and the give Cruz a ton of third places for the rest of the primary. Thanks John. Kasick will get trump to 1237.

You're wrong. This nomination contest isn't that ideological.

Kasich has built much of his campaign on the concept that he is the more mature, more experienced, adult-in-the-room. He has intentionally positioned himself as the "anti-Trump".

Therefore, if he drops from the race, more of his supporters would remain anti-Trump and move to Cruz, with the possible exception of the establishment types who hate both Trump and Cruz and would support neither.

If Kasich really wants to stop Trump from getting 1237 delegates, his best move would be to drop out of the race.

More of his supporters are anti-Trump enough to move to Cruz, and Cruz would then keep more delegates from Trump than Kasich ever could. Since many remaining congressional districts are WTA, having two non-Trump candidates keeps helping Trump.

But Kasich doesn't JUST want to stop Trump from getting 1237, he's still dreaming that if he can stay in the race and Trump still doesn't get the 1237, he might be able to land enough delegates to win on a later ballot.

Yes, if Romney and the GOP just worked as hard to defeat Obama. That is the glaring issue! They need to answer to that. Donald Trump causes Romney and the GOP to go nuclear. But with Obama, who was well known for the America hating radical that he is, they had no fire power.
