Bernie Sanders calls Joe Arpaio's Tent City a 'disgrace to this country'

Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has labeled an Arizona prison known as Tent City a "disgrace to this country."

"I think that what (Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio) is doing is really a disgrace to this country and it makes us look very, very bad all over the world," Sanders told KTAR News 92.3 FM's Mac & Gaydos on Monday.

Sanders said the jail, which has drawn criticism in the past for being too extreme, is inhumane.

"You don't have prisoners in this country exposed to 130-degree temperatures," he said. "You don't humiliate people. That is not what American justice should be about."

Bernie just does not like the idea of his first amendment hating brownshirts wearing pink shorts. Appalling to Bernie’s sense of fashion.

130 degrees is inhumane to prisoners yet it’s ok for our troops? I think Bernie has rabies.

It is such a disgrace that criminals receive similar living conditions to our troops in the middle east. They should be living under lean-to’s.

Just about the same thing Sheriff Joe told the Mrs Commie when she went down there to do an unannounced visit. Joe approached her and gave her a personal tour and said he would have done better had she called ahead which completely underpinned her visit. Beyond that she asked why were these prisoners in Jail? Joe pointed out they were all convicted. She responded she did not know that. He retorted you should have asked.

"You don't have prisoners in this country exposed to 130-degree temperatures," he said.

Two responses:

1. Oh yeah? Just watch him.

2. Maybe we don't we save that for fully dressed soldiers wearing an 80 pound pack.

I am probably mistaken on this point but I’d say one of the first acts of political correctness in this country was to rename criminal punishment to criminal rehabilitation. Crime and punishment go hand in hand and punishment is the price for the crime. End of story. Rehabilitating a criminal by giving them an air conditioned environment and all the other luxuries of motel living and three squares is why the correctional recidivism in this country is so damned high. Per Sheriff Joe, an American hero, do the crime and be prepared to do the time. Prison time ought to be hard time so they choose on their own to find another career. Bernie Sanders is sucking rocks on this one.

This is a psychological condition known as projection whereby one projects one’s own condition on another.

Punishment and rehabilitation are not and never have been mutually exclusive.

With incarceration punishment is clear. Calling it rehabilitation implies that something else is being done.

As to the effectiveness of the rehabilitation component, well, different approaches have different levels of effectiveness. Also, some people just can’t be rehabilitated. If they can’t be rehabilitated then efforts to do so may really tick them off. I’m okay with it ticking them off because I see it as more punishment.

Having served in the military, where I experienced temperatures as bad as or worse than what criminals in Joe Arpaio’s Tent City experience, without being “humiliated”, I am not interested in that socialist’s rhetoric. Criminals and illegals are entitled to food, clothing, and shelter, but that does not include the same quality of each as productive Americans earn.

it’s prison, not a daycare facility. it’s supposed to be a place you don’t want to ever end up in.

meanwhile... the accommodations equal similar setups by our military.

our prisoners should NEVER be treated better then our service men/women.

For all the clamor of Christians to get involved in the affairs of government, it seems superficial. This is one of the places where this could help, but few want to deal (or are capable of dealing) with the spiritual grit and dirt.

The way of the world is just to wish a vengeance. Modern societies discovered that vengeance works in cycles, however, without the grudge ever getting resolved on either side. And so their penal ideas became more humane.

Yet there is a reason for the “penitent” in the modern term “penitentiary.”

I think a Christian “penitence program” with measurable attitudinal results could in fact speed the passage of prisoners through such a system, but it would have to be voluntary. Other faiths could mount their own efforts if they wished.

Probably Arpaio’s ideas would tend to drive ex-prisoners out of HIS area. But that’s just to wish the grudges he has created on the rest of America.

There are also qualifications needed to go into the military... not every Tom, Dick, or Harriet gets in.
