Of the many ways in which Donald J. Trump is disrupting American politics, one of the most compelling is his disregard for the established rules of communicating with voters.
More than any other candidate, Mr. Trump embodies the evolving norms of communication that are being enabled and encouraged by technology and the matrix of connectivity that defines modern life: authenticity over authority, surprise over consistency, celebrity over experience.
His approach is jarring to a political establishment that has taken very different lessons from its experiences over decades of modern campaigning. Risk-averse above all, candidates and those who advise them have long prized message discipline, shied away from anything spontaneous and looked for opportunities to attack opponents who stray from talking points.
To those portions of the electorate fed up with politics as usual, Mr. Trumps willingness to say just about anything and to improvise as he goes seems more refreshing and trustworthy than disqualifying.
Politicians are by nature cautious and risk-averse, said Mark McKinnon, a veteran political image maker who served in George W. Bushs White House. They like to make people happy, so their reflex is to check off strategies and tactics that have worked in the past. Presidential Election 2016
But this approach isnt working today, Mr. McKinnon said. Just as we like novel and movie plots that surprise us, so are we attracted to candidates who do the unconventional, he said. Hence the success of Donald

If Trump can organize his Presidency as well as he has organized his campaign, it will be an amazing 4 years.
It is telling he has the ability to hire all the right people to get the job done during his campaign with little or no glitches.
Hillary weighs her words more carefully than any other candidate and she is more untrustworthy than any other candidate.
And maybe she is more unworthy of trust than any other candidate in US history.
Funny how they have to make up reasons rather than just open their eyes. Stopping ILLEGAL immigration, fixing our stupid tax system and rebelling against Political Correctness is enough for his supporters. Oh, and believing that he’s going to be able to do it is important too.
The same McKinnon in the video from “The Circus” talking about how to stop Trump. Interesting they interview him on this.
Republican politicians, maybe. The dems have made an art form of incitement.
and we're SICK of it.
Trump is not a scripted, focus grouped, pre-packaged, and plastic wrapped candidate like we’ve become used to.
Trump said that no presidential candidate should be allowed to use a teleprompter, can you imagine 0bama not being allowed to use a teleprompter in 2008, he would have never gotten out of the starting gate.
What?!? Leave Carol Burnett alone, Globe!!!
I agree, it should be a felony for a presidential candidate to use a teleprompter. The people want to know who the candidates are not who they pretend to be.
That’s a puzzle, because her family tragedy is well known, has been for years. Must have been a slow week, or perhaps they’re re-running an archival story because the Trump cover will sell.
“Trump is not a scripted, focus grouped, pre-packaged, and plastic wrapped candidate like weve become used to.”
And that is why so many people make the mistake that Trump is out of control - that he shoots from the hip. The reality is he knows exactly where he’s going and it’s always two steps ahead and levels above what we are sued to. While other candidates are fighting last week’s war Trump moves on. Evidence of this is his theme at the rallies yesterday and at the last debate: The biggest story in politics world wide - the numbers of people coming into the republican party and the fact the party should embrace them. The party status quo not only do not recognize that fact - they are actively working against the movement. What losers. You never win the war by fighting last month’s battle.
“a veteran political image maker who served in George W. Bushs White House.”
Enough said about THIS guy.
Trump is popular because he talks about bread and butter subjects that are boring to most of the MSM but vitally impotent to fly over country. i.e. 75% of the population.
Good post.
I would love to see it be The Donald VS The Bern. Now that would be fun watching.
I will get to see first hand how the non-traditional Trump campaign pays off. There is nothing on traditional media for Trump here in Missouri. Also a lot of negative PAC ads (almost too many, could backfire) against Trump. No calls from Trump and no emails.
