One state, two Floridas: A land of Cubans and crackers
CNN International ^ | March 14, 2016 | Chris Moody and Jeff Simon

Florida is a sprawling, diverse swing state with multiple voting blocs and ethnicities, which is part of what makes it so unpredictable in politics.

With the presidential race in full swing here, two constituencies in particular help show just how different Florida voters can be: The Cubans, a vocal voting bloc of immigrant exiles and the Florida crackers, families who have lived here for generations. Both lean Republican, but each community represents two very different types of Florida voters.

Maybe I’d be upset about being called a “cracker” if it wasn’t such a pathetic insult and the people using the slur weren’t such losers.

Atlanta’s minor league baseball team before they got the Braves was “The Georgia Crackers” although Atlanta wasn’t really Cracker country.

The Panhandle is way different than south Florida

My favorite place in the world, save my native North Central Louisiana. When Mrs. abb & I vacation there, it's the only place that also feels like home.

“Isn’t “cracker” a derogatory racial slur? This is confusing.”

A cracker was the slave driver that cracked the whip.
They were both black and white. Cracker-Slavedriver.

Not quite, the term arose to describe the Florida version of a cowboy, who drove cattle while on horseback by cracking a whip.

"The crackers, descendants of ranchers that date back as far as the sixteenth century, derive their nickname from the sound of a whip they use to drive cattle across the state and out of Florida's thick underbrush."

Doesn't sound like they object to being called "crackers".

From Ocala north is as deep South as Georgia and Alabama. These voters are intensely conservative and Republican. They will vote tomorrow.

Hi, I'm a recovering Florida cracker.

Not Cuban. White, Republican, conservative born and raised in the western US. But I am a retired and am raising Angus beef cattle now. Authentic cracker. :-)

LOL!

CNN says a lot of things, but none of the Republicans of Cuban ethnicity I was acquainted with, ever called me a “cracker”.

Almost every Florida native or resident here longer than I, called me a “Yankee” for at least ten years.

Now I am offended!
I’m going to have to scold people for NOT calling me a name!
ROTFLMAO!

Your right, I looked it up. So all along blacks have been
insulting whites by calling them Floroduh Cowmen.
Being called a cracker never bothered me before but now that
I know what it really means I’m soooooo insulted.

Imagine a Texan being called a Floriduh Cowman. That’s an
insult for sure./s

Hard to believe now but during the early 60s the University of Florida had Confederate flags on their football helmets.

Yeah, I grew up in n. florida, great times being a river rat, Suwanee river and Santa fe...still places for bigfoot out there. I miss it every day, old florida will be gone soon, I'm glad to have seen it while it was around.
