How to Do It

It's not just in Europe where immigration -- legal, illegal and all the varieties thereof in between -- has become a political flashpoint. In this country Donald Trump made it a centerpiece of his presidential campaign. Much as he's done about everything and anything else in order to appeal to every passing shift in public passions. Just where he is today on the immigrant issue, or even this minute, is too much trouble to keep up with. He keeps changing his position in his posts on Facebook and Twitter.

But there are happy exceptions to the anti-immigrant hysteria now gripping Europe. To cite one of them: Satriano in the poverty-stricken province of Calabria in Italy, where so many young people have left to find work that the town could have been mistaken for one big old folks' home. But the arrival of Muslim refugees there is being seen not as a danger but opportunity. To quote Luigi Marotti, who's in charge of maintaining its little Roman Catholic church: "Thank God they brought us these people. Satriano was dead. Thanks to them it's alive again. The village can start growing."

As in this country, Italy needs workers for those jobs its own people are unwilling to do -- like the slow, laborious work of picking olives and oranges. But in Satriano, assimilation is working in its usual wholesome way. To quote what its mayor said of these newcomers: "When they first arrived, there were some prejudices. Then the socialization started, and immigration is gradually growing. They play football with the local youth, they join the town's celebrations, they do street maintenance works."

The arrival of these strangers in a strange land has even brought back old memories of how Italians themselves were once the suspect immigrants. To quote one of the townsfolk: "We Italians went to places like Argentina with cardboard luggage in our hands and nobody sent us away. In the past we went there. Now they come here. We need to all be brothers."

The moral of this story: There is no more heartening -- or efficient -- force in the world than good will.

I got no problem with this stuff as long as they don’t conflate illegal immigration with immigration. That leaves very little, though.

Where was the barf alert?

If a troubled Italian town welcomes such immigrants and appears lively again, the cost will be that the Italian town ceases to be Italian. A rich culture will be lost.

He will eat those words and very soon. Fool.

There is no more heartening — or efficient — force in the world than good will.

Nor one more self destructive in naivety.

But the problem is more than illegal vs legal immigration. Our Country can no longer handle the demands (police, schools, medical). It’s not the lovely story of the poor immigrant who came to America for the better life. Who respected our culture and values. No, now they get here and cant sign up for the freebies fast enough. Expect them to assimilate and they will flip you off or call you racist. There was a chart posted on FR from Sen. Sessions that showed over 90% get food assistance. That is in addition to SSI, Housing etc. We need to stop this insanity. We cant afford it.

If anyone has the chart I mentioned, please post or send to me. Thanks!!

Very nice, there is 3% of this entire debacle that’s advantageous. Heartwarming.

“But the problem is more than illegal vs legal immigration.”

Exactly. I saw that in 1970 13 million people in America was born elsewhere. Now its 60 million. And I would also nite that the character of the new ones is not the same as the post WWII wave.
The new bunch does not revere America and act grateful.

Are you completly stupid or totally biased and vicious like obama_soros-merkel-clinton and other croocks who hate true culture , freedom , civilization and democracy ?

I think it’s both . Your political masters are criminals who deliberatly try to DESTROY our freedom / civilization in order to increase their power and wealth .

So little man , don’t waste your time making the dirty propaganda for those criminals .
You seem to deliberatly ignore notions of culture , civilization , freedom and democracy . You seem to ignore history , christianism , islam ....Did you hear about Lebanon , Serbia , Kosovo ( thank you Clinton ) and Turkey which pretends ( dreams ) to be part of Europe .
Don’t you think it’s curious ? Very curious ?

Many areas of the USA lack sufficient affordable housing and road capacity.

If the freeways are backed up putting 10% more vehicles on them just makes the problem worse.

Putting 10% more vehicles on the road will result in about 20% more vehicle accidents in crowded areas. Motor vehicle insurance will cost about 20% more.

If our planet has a fever, putting 10% more CO2 into the air will make it worse.

I’d love to see Hillary as President, of a foreign country.

Let’s export government leadership instead of importing people.

The problems can take time to surface.

People might be happy to come from a Third World hellhole to live in a French suburb (most are dumps) or a dumpy Belgian burg, but their children won’t be.

To quote Luigi Marotti, who's in charge of maintaining its little Roman Catholic church: "Thank God they brought us these people. Satriano was dead. Thanks to them it's alive again. The village can start growing."

That's a very Christian attitude, Luigi. Those celebrations sound like fun, until your new neighbors make it so dangerous that women have to stay in their homes after dark.

I'm thinking that they don't have any television of newspapers in Satriano, or you would be aware of the muslim takeover of Europe and might not be so welcoming.

Having said that, I'm glad that so far everything has been working out for you. Of course, the down side is that your new neighbors are members of the most Imperialistic "religion" ever. So, none of this growth will benefit your little Roman Catholic church.

After the demographics of your little Italian village shift from Roman Catholic to majority Muslim, these north African invaders will succeed in conquering your people from within without firing a shot. Hannibal would have been proud of them. And you won't have your little Roman Catholic church to maintain, because it will be replaced by a mosque.
