Sometimes you just gotta do what's right. My first job after retiring from the Army was as a county jailer. I left my control booth one night to assist another jailer getting a pretty bad beat down. Got 3 days off without pay, turned to 5 when I told the SGT if it happened again I'd do the same thing.

I went fishing.

Maybe there was something similar in a vintage Emergency! episode?

I clicked to find the usual story of government run amok. Found a Trump campaign ad. Yup, it’s Silly Season.

This may have been an overreaction, but as other people have written, suspending these firefighters might also have been the right thing to do under the circumstances.

There is so much rush to judgment these days when local incidents get social media and/or MSM attention (including by the media itself) that it seems a lot more stepping back, being skeptical and reserving judgment until the situation can be examined more closely is in order.

I was EMT certified and served as an LEO for 30 years. You gave the right answer.

so you both would be like those clowns who stood by and watched some poor man drown because they were in training and had not received their water rescue training yet.

Fortunately for the victim, there was a civilian woman nearby who rescued the poor guy.

So much of this BS is because of lawsuits.

Fine!

Play the game!

Sue the city for suspending the firemen saying the guilt it has caused the parents has caused psychological damage and they can no longer work or function due to the stress and guilt it has caused.

Sue the heck out of them. Fight stupidity with stupidity and only withdraw the suit when they withdraw the punishment.

I went back and re-read the fox news article several times then fought my way through all the local readers comments. One thing that is not mentioned is why was the fire service on-scene at a medical call? If the two firefighters were on station or out on the road in the truck and heard the medical call and decided to respond then what they were doing is called freelancing. If they were dispatched for a medical assist then ok, but the article doesn’t say one way or the other.

I live in a semi-rural area and sometimes when there is a serious medical emergency and the ETA for EMS is extended, then we will get called to do a medical assist. Our county 911 dispatch knows that if they dispatch fire they will get at least a few EMTs to respond. I probably respond to about 5 or 6 of these per year and since we are volunteer firefighters we go directly to the scene in our personal vehicles unless the firehouse is between our homes and the scene. This is the only time we respond directly to the scene, all other times we respond to the station. We would take the firetruck on the call simply to have and AED available if needed.

So I arrive on scene in my car and I pull out O2 and a BLS bag from the trunk. Usually someone with a radio shows up and communicates with the 911 center to give and take updates but we don’t transport patients in our cars ever. Unless the firefighter is also an EMT they do little or no patient care.

I suspect there is way more going on here than what is in the article. If I take a fire truck out to give a newb practice driving and a fire district 2 towns over gets called out for a dwelling fire with confirmed entrapment and I decide to respond without being dispatched then I’m freelancing. Our insurance will not cover any claims that may result and if hurt our workman’s comp will not pay.

If fire wasn’t dispatched to this medical call and there had been a structure fire or MVA while the firetruck was transporting a medical patient to the hospital and fire was delayed because of it then a suspension would be mild compared to what would have happened to these two firefighters.

I read that prior to that show, only a handful of fire departments had paramedic units. The actors became spokesmen for emergency medical services.

I happen to be a certified swift water rescue tech., and my volly fire company is a certified swiftwater rescue team (PA 3-A).

If there is a patient in a swift water situation that needs help and I can offer said help without endangering myself or others then I will do it. If at the time I don’t have the equipment or the manpower or resources then I will do what I can short of getting myself killed. We do not under any circumstances go jumping into the water without having the resources and a plan in place. Sorry if that offends but that is the way it is.

I’m curious Chickensoup, what level of fire/rescue/EMS training do you have and how long have you been a volunteer? You might be interested in knowing that I have in my left ankle two plates, 13 screws and 2 pins that were my pay for one of my fire calls. This happened 5 years ago.

The first thing I think of in the morning is my foot and the last think I think of at night before I go to bed is my foot and all day long I think of my foot. Still, with all that I’m not on any kind of disability and didn’t get any settlement and I still run fire/rescue/EMS calls in spite of being an assclown, how about you?

You have no idea what I would have done or have done. I agreed that fatboy gave the correct answer.

I get tired of keyboard commandos always looking for a fight or an opportunity to give an insult over just about anything on FR.

If you had asked a question, I could have chosen to help you with your ignorance, but as for your stupidity, you are on your own.

Well done.

Thank you for your service.

Your ankle hardware is almost identical to my wife’s. She remains very active and is always mindful of her ankle.

Stay safe....
