Republican front-runner Donald Trump said Thursday he is softening his stance on visas for highly-skilled workers.
Im changing. We need highly-skilled people in this country, Trump said during the Fox News Republican debate in Detroit. If we cant do it, we will get them in.
Trumps stance toward awarding H1-B visas is different from the one he takes on his campaign website, which argues that more visas for highly-skilled foreigners would decimate American workers.
One of the biggest problems we have is people go to the best colleges as soon as theyre finished, they get shoved out. They want to stay in this country," Trump said at the debate. "They want to stay here desperately. Theyre not able to stay here. For that purpose, we absolutely have to be able to keep the brainpower in this country.
Trump said he was now in favor of the H1B-visa program - despite what his website still says.
So you are abandoning the position on your website? Fox News debate moderator Megyn Kelly asked.
Im changing it and Im softening the position because we have to have talented people in this country, Trump said.

Fox News is caught DECEVING again.
Fair and balance my @ss!
How come Fox News did not check the official statement of the Trump campaign?
Because then the hit piece would go up in smoke.
If Freepers have questions about Trump’s position, then I highly recommend going to his campaign web site first.
The Establishment Media has been caught in so many lies that you can’t trust them anymore. They are filthy degenerate globalist rats.
Like we need a program to incentivize universities to become printing presses for green cards. Don’t they have enough incentives to do bad things?
Trump going in the wrong direction on this issue.
Suspect there will be more disappointments.
So are TDSers celebrating because the H-1B seems safe with Trump? What are you celebrating here? Explain.
It's called political spin to distract from his inability to excuse hiring imported Unskilled labor to work at his Floriduh resort while the temp. Agency in Floriduh had a list of close to 300 people willing to work those jobs.
So Donnie does what Donnie does. He blovates and deflects....then he points his finger at an object then yells squirrel and all the tRump fans run after the bait.
On the Cruz healthcare plan: Google is your friend.
Dugout Don deflects? Say it ain’t so!
Simple question from last nights debate.
Did or did not Donald say he was changing his position on H1B Visas on live TV?
No spin, no deflection....just a simple yes or no?
...and I don't. Sounds like we're alike in that I don't expect my choice to be in alignment with me on everything, too. H1B visas are a big thing with me because (a) it draws a line directly to the economy and jobs, and (b) I've been directly impacted. But given the options and the likelihood that no chances will occur to the program with any new President, I still have to side w/Cruz.
There is validity to the argument that to have foreigners enter the USA on college visas and get degrees in STEM fields and then force them to go back to their countries if they don't want to. We are enriching our competitors that way (foreign visa students don't get tax payer assistance).
I agree on anti-Muslim anything.
But my focus is not anti legal immigration. I am against illegal immigration to the max.
Cruz has effectively morphed into this position without repudiation of his prior intent to expand the H-1B program. I think that lack of repentence is a terrible character flaw, particularly in a person claiming to be a devout Christian. He should have done the same about his vote on the Corker Bill.
I have a bridge in NY for sale. Interested?
The fact is the Republicans are leading the charge in this regard.
I voted for Trump this week...but already have buyer’s remorse. I can’t understand how he could have a policy paper on his website that he doesn’t actually plan on implementing. In a nutshell, he is just like Rubio, Cruz, and every other lying RINO. I’ll still vote for Trump, like I did Romney 4 years ago. But, I’m not optimistic he will deliver on any of his promises.
We need a leader who is wise and courageous. Waffling on the most important issue shows neither.
We agree there, as I said in this post this morning. The Manhattan Project saved many American lives.
There is validity to the argument that to have foreigners enter the USA on college visas and get degrees in STEM fields and then force them to go back to their countries if they don't want to. We are enriching our competitors that way (foreign visa students don't get tax payer assistance).
Yes there is. It is the practice of our universities selling out Americans for higher foreign tuition payments that creates much of that disparity. It must end.
But my focus is not anti legal immigration. I am against illegal immigration to the max.
Donald simply rewards it by "deporting" them and waving them right back in.
RE: Cruz’s vote on the Corker Bill.
This is his explanation ( whether you believe it or not, I don’t think we can determine what his true motives are. IMHO, it was a tactical mistake, THAT’s ALL ):
I voted no on cloture because we should have insisted on amendments to put real teeth in this bill. Ultimately, I voted yes on final passage because it may delay, slightly, President Obamas ability to lift the Iran sanctions and it ensures we will have a Congressional debate on the merits of the Iran deal.”
Cruz never acted as if his “yes” vote for cloture was a victory.
But then, he voted NO to the final Iran deal ( and rallied against it (together with Donald Trump ) ).
Actually, I don’t want any immigrants. I’ve repeated that all over this thread and elsewhere. There should be a 2 decade moratorium while THESE current legal immigrants are assimilated.
That said, I do think there’s a distinction between a permanent immigrant AND one with a 3 year permit to be in the country.
I don’t want either right now.
Understood that. It was potentially a tactically intelligent vote, but politically it was brain dead. Lee had it right.
No, but I have a former Canadian, turned naturalized American you can vote for. Unless, of course, you would prefer the Cuban Anchor Baby.
