Russian warship Pyotr Veliky, Peter the Great, will be fitted with new-generation hypersonic 3M22 missiles in a 2019-2022 upgrade for the Russian Navy's only operational nuclear-powered cruiser, the world's largest nuclear-propelled military vessel that is not an aircraft carrier, a shipbuilding industry source told TASS on Friday.

"The Pyotr Veliky will start repairs in the third or fourth quarter of 2019. Repairs and upgrade are due for completion in late 2022, the ship to be equipped with Zircon hypersonic anti-ship missiles," the source said.

Zircon's operating parameters are classified. But according to open sources, the new missile's range may be up to 400 kilometers (250 miles, flying five times faster than the speed of sound. Given its sheer speed, the Zircon will be extremely difficult to intercept with current missile defense technology.

Since it’s down to a matter of cost, the USA and Russia should join up and put the hurt on the mean and deadly filth that is making life hard on those that just want to contribute to a good life.

Start with wiping out islam and its followers. Move on to any other BS dogma that harms others.

Repairs and upgrade are due for completion in late 2022,

That's six years and some. I wonder if ship defenses will be able to handle such threats by then? I am thinking of a short range laser defense.

Only in a sneak attack scenario where they are allowed with 250 miles of a US carrier.

The US carrier will see them coming from a heck of a lot further than 250 miles, and the ship will be hit with a variety of standoff weapons.

And the US will counter with a sub-sonic Tomahawk-like thud. (yippee)
We are falling farther and farther behind.

Hey, don’t worry. Russia is merely a regional power, just like ISIS is the JV.

the idiots in the white house are dangerous. I pray that we get to the end of their regime without an epochal event - like a major city vaporizing.

Remember the Oscar II-class submarine KURSK was sunk by one of its Shkval VM-111 supercavitating torpedo that blew-up in the forward torpedo room.

If the Russians don't take care, maybe one of their 3M22 hypersonic cruise missiles could do a number on its cruiser?

“The US carrier will see them coming from a heck of a lot further than 250 miles, and the ship will be hit with a variety of standoff weapons.”

The Soviets designed their big missile ships like the PTG to be Fire-and-forget carrier killers. They considered trading a missile cruiser for a carrier to be a good deal.

Short range defense for something coming at you at 5,000 ft/sec? I'd say you are screwed if you missed up until then. That is similar to the speed a tank shoots depleted uranium rounds to kill other tanks.

Waiting for the "CIWS Rules" fools to show up.

Correct. But sensor capability has evolved by magnitudes since the Kirovs were first built.

And said ship will still have to have a tug accompanying on any and all cruises due to the absolute certainty that the ship’s engines will stop functioning.

“Since it’s down to a matter of cost, the USA and Russia should join up and put the hurt on the mean and deadly filth that is making life hard on those that just want to contribute to a good life.”

The inexplicable animosity between the two powers post-USSR has been the only thing that has permitted the continued existence of terror. The Chinese aren’t real fans of it either.

Agreed, but I only see that happening if two factions are scraped out of power and run down the disposal: all neocons, and everything Clinton-Obama on the left. I only see one candidate who would do that. It cannot happen before 2017.

They could do that all from above. Mecca first. Tehran second. Then a whole bunch more.
