That's six years and some. I wonder if ship defenses will be able to handle such threats by then? I am thinking of a short range laser defense.

Short range defense for something coming at you at 5,000 ft/sec? I'd say you are screwed if you missed up until then. That is similar to the speed a tank shoots depleted uranium rounds to kill other tanks.

Short range anything will not work against a Mach 5 target.
