GOP presidential hopeful Ted Cruz plans to interrupt his campaign ahead of Saturday's South Carolina primary to attend the Mass. The Texas senator has been among those urging the Senate not to consider replacing Scalia until after the November election.

I think the reason Obama refused to attend is because it would cause him to be in a Catholic Church in the presence of the Holy Eucharist and forced to view the Crucifix.
When Obama appeared at Georgetown University he demanded that they cover up all Crucifixes and all references to Jesus Christ. To their eternal shame, the priests who run Georgetown University complied.
The Basilica would not allow Obama to do this.

Obama’s absence is a good thing. It makes him look petty. The funeral and the church are not desecrated by his presence. And the cleanup for the Sunday Masses can be done by a custodian — no exorcist required.

Here Alito is shaking his head when Obama lied about a case the conservatives had won on the Court.
