Douthat is actually pretty good. If you read something sensible in the NYT, you can be pretty sure it’s Douthat.

Did he fail or did the actual system as constructed in the constitution lead to its implosion as John Adams predicted when he said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” (John Adams, October 11, 1798.) I would have to edit this today to be “a Biblically moral and religious people.”
