Dying infants, chronic power outages and empty shelves mark the world's worst-performing economy
CARACAS, Venezuela--In a hospital in the far west of this beleaguered country, the economic crisis took a grim toll in the past week: Six infants died because there wasn't enough medicine or functioning respirators.
Here in the capital, the crisis has turned ordinary life into an ordeal for nearly everyone. Chronic power outages have prompted the government to begin rationing electricity, darkening shopping malls. Homes and apartments regularly suffer water shortages.
Rosalba Castellano, 74 years old, spent hours this week in what has become a desperate routine for millions: waiting in long lines to buy whatever food is available. She walked away with just two liters of cooking oil.
"I hoped to buy toilet paper, rice, pasta," she said. "But you can't find them." Her only choice will be to hunt for the goods at marked-up prices on the black market. The government, she said, "is putting us through savage suffering."

Elections have consequences.
Not enough attention and focus is being put on Venezuela in this campaign or by the media.
We know why. This is what the US would become if we go with socialism of the Marxist Democrats.
And don't think I'm gloating here. Heavy-handed regulation from a central authority (like DC) can turn a free market into a socialist one. It just takes longer, and is not labeled as such.
If the elections are rigged you can’t blame everyone.
I can't help but wonder where in the article is calls for all us bleeding hearts “to have a heart” and welcome hundreds of thousands of poor refugees into this country.
Meanwhile, not a damned one of them have ever driven the back roads and hills of Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia or any of the other rural area states and seen those same children here existing much like those poor little Venezuelan babies - only not as fortunate to be a refugee.
Once Trump and Sanders win there respective nominations, I expect Trump will begin schooling the nation on the realities capitalism vs socialism.
And I think it’s going to be good for America.
This is Socialism/Communism, you ignorant university Leftists. Every professor who has indoctrinated our spoiled students should be sent to Venezuela to reap the results of what they’ve been teaching to our young skulls full of mush.
Coming to America.
so is this how ancient peoples disappeared in the past , Communism ?
Enough Venezuelans believed in a unicorn infested utopia to vote for this. Not just once, but they reelected the guy responsible.
We still have to wait and see how many Americans believe in unicorns. Hopefully there are not enough to produce a socialist “utopia.”
Americans should carefully study Venezuela.
Venezuela is an OIL-RICH country that voted itself the SAME style of govrnment touoted by Bernie, Hillary and the rest of the Dumbocrats.
They should then look at the rest of the sad list of SOCIALIST countries, then ask themselves, “Do I really, truly, want to live there?”
Think before you vote.
It’s too bad that Obama’s buddy, Hugo Chavez, croaked too early. I’m sure Venezuela would be a paradise right now./s

That’s socialism. They wanted it. They got it good and hard. I only feel bad for those who knew better but couldn’t get out of the way.
bernietopia.
This is Obama’s goal for the US. How much damage can he do for the rest of 2016 to move us toward his finish line?
Folk aren’t suffering badly until they are willing to bring a gun, a knife, or a sharp stick to the fight.
If they aren’t willing to introduce Maduro to Nikolai Ceausescu, then they must not be suffering very much.
