Cars drove the 1950s economic engine, along with housing. When domestic cars failed in quality due to the UAW and the unreliable workforce, foreign makers invaded the market. Why are detroit, flint and countless rust belt bergs deserted? It was the workforce! Leftist unionists defended a slovenly work ethic resulting in the "monday morning car," bane of the buying public.

Riots and poor work ethic ruined the ethnic rust belt, and moved the jobs to Japan, southern US, and China.

That is not what happened. Cars in the 1960's and very early 1970's are collectors items now and people just loved them. I could work on my own car (68 Firebird) and repairs were inexpensive. What the problem was the oil embargo caught Detroit by surprise and the Japs happened to have small efficient vehicles in large numbers available for export. The Japs got lucky.
