When domestic cars failed in quality due to the UAW and the unreliable workforce, foreign makers invaded the market. That is not what happened. Cars in the 1960's and very early 1970's are collectors items now and people just loved them. I could work on my own car (68 Firebird) and repairs were inexpensive. What the problem was the oil embargo caught Detroit by surprise and the Japs happened to have small efficient vehicles in large numbers available for export. The Japs got lucky.

Right. So did Volkswagen. Everybody "got lucky" but the US makers.
