Four days after winning the Iowa caucuses, Cruz's team is still struggling to answer questions about whether it relied on trickery to pad its lead by convincing Iowans that Carson - a rival for evangelical votes - was dropping out of the race. What the Cruz campaign initially called a knee-jerk response to ambiguous news reports has been revealed to be a more coordinated effort to steer Carson voters to the Cruz camp amid the chaotic caucus atmosphere.
A campaign of tweets, emails and calls to Cruz precinct captains encouraged the rapid spread of the news that Carson would be leaving the race and that a vote for him would be a "waste." The Cruz camp denies that it did anything other than pass along accurate news reports.
Anecdotal evidence has emerged that some voters who had intended to back Carson changed their minds after hearing the news. And perhaps more significantly, a pile-on by Cruz's opponents has kept the pressure on the Texas senator's campaign.
In at least one case, the misinformation left its mark. Waterloo resident Becky Smith said she stepped into the George Washington Carver Academy to cast her first-ever vote in the Iowa caucuses for Carson. She registered onsite as a Republican, switching her affiliation as an independent, so she could cast her ballot. But a man helping distribute ballots - she didn't know his name or campaign affiliation - said he had just heard that Carson was "suspending his campaign."

True.
Trump very particularly says he will NOT let them all back in. With your screen name, why peddle a lie?
Cruz is going to wish he had never done this to Carson. It takes a lot to get him up set, but you can see this did it. If he was a Democrat a lack of character would not matter.
Pray America wakes
Yep...Cruz knows this guy's pedigree and he hired him anyway.
“Tonight he MUST be apologetic and not lay blame at Carson which is why voters are pissed off.”
How Cruz handles this issue tonight (and, boy, will it come up), will say a lot about him as a man, never mind as a candidate for office. In all truth, this Cruz supporter has been disappointed by this and am hoping that he can muster up the grace and humility to take ownership (should have already done so with some dismissals, in my view).
I dated myself with the sausage reference. It's an old political chestnut originating from Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle."
Did Cruz hire Jeff Roe despite his reputation...or because of it?
You sound like someone who might condone shoplifting.
Simple as this. Cruz may have won some in Iowa with this trick, but it will even out by losing some down the line.
A leftist who is for building a wall, deporting Mexicans, deporting Mooselips, pro second Amendment, cutting taxes, destroying ISIS, end Obamacare, cleaning up DC and does not lie.
Sure he is not dropping out of the race too?
I believe you’re right.
Very true......he better not get all sermon on us and even worse “lawyery”. It does cause me pause about someone who refuses to take responsibility for his group. Obviously the buck does not stop with him. And this is why I have been saying that he is like Obama in many ways. Of course that is completely vilified by the Cruz fans, but doesn’t Obama always deflect blame from himself and gives it to others? Only about 10 hours or so until we see if he will pull the plug on his campaign or revive it.
Clever little name, touch back amnesty which is another Cruz lie. What is Cruz’ plan?
No! Disseminating false rumors are pushing down his numbers. Gossip and tale bearing get low marks.
Get over it. People aren’t stupid. Ben Carson is a little flaky and made a YUGE campaign mistake which really didn’t mater, but let’s all pretend it destroyed him. Trump Savaged him in November comparing him to a child molester. Insinuating he was like a child molester was the dirties thing I’ve seen. It destroyed Carson who went from the mid 20’s in the polls to the 10 range. Sad but true.
Cruz ran a smart, organized and effective campaign in Iowa. He was by far the most principled and serious conservative. Guess what? He won. Pretty simple.
Didn’t read where the Rubio campaign was telling caucus Ben Carson supporter switch. Ted Cruz campaign disseminated the rumor they own it.
Jeff Roe worked for Dewhurst against Cruz during their Senate primary and was responsible for producing a mailer that questioned Cruz patriotism.
I guess Cruz liked what he saw...
Cruz, for as long as he could get away with it, said we would ‘secure’ the border [itself a weasel word] and then “have a conversation” about the millions of illegals. Translation: we the people can say anything we like, but those in power will always prevail in this “conversation.” They will legalize the hordes, and we can like it or lump it.
I didn’t know that. Amazing.
I like Steve King. Any guy who uses a Desert Eagle to dispatch a raccoon is OK in my book.
