RICHMOND — A package of bills in the gun deal Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) struck with Republican lawmakers advanced Friday, putting the agreement on a path to final passage next week despite a continued outcry from gun control advocates.

The deal would expand the rights of concealed carry handgun permit holders in Virginia and around the country in exchange for tighter restrictions on domestic abusers and voluntary background checks at gun shows.

A House panel joined the full Senate in passing all three bills as of Friday. A floor vote in the House could come as early as Tuesday.

Background checks are mandatory at the shows I attend, no matter who you buy from.

What the Hell are VA Republicans thinking?

Never ever compromise with Democrats on guns.

What is "tighter restrictions" on "domestic abusers?" If a husband and a wife have a mere argument, does that mean the husband's guns get taken away?

This is spin. Remember when Ken Starr was the independent prosecutor during the Clinton years, and the Clintons made a public big stink about how right-wing partisan he was, only to be popping the champagne corks in private?

Its a big nothing burger. Basically our side gets universal reciprocity. We pick up a few states as a result, so we actually end up better off than we were before herring tried to stick it to us.

In exchange private sellers MAY run a background check at a gun show. Strictly voluntary. There is no way to do so now even if you wanted to. And permanent protective orders will restrict your gun rights in the same way they already do at the Federal level.

Backstory is that universal reciprocity was going to pass with close to a veto proof majority and with some rat votes. McAwful will sign that in exchange for essentially face saving stuff that doesn’t affect our rights one iota. I guess you could make the argument (as GOA seems to) that the voluntary checks will eventually become mandatory. There has always been the risk that we’ll eventually end up with mandatory background checks at gun shows anyway, so what’s new under the sun?

Upshot: its a good deal. GOA doesn’t like to do deals. I get it, and for the most part they’re right. This is one of those times when I think they’re wrong.

Naah. The wackos are against it because basically they get very little and we get universal reciprocity. They thought they had finally stuck it to those eeeeevil gun owners with the reciprocity kerfuffle, and in the end we get better than what we started with.

It’s a purple state. The gop for what they’re worth has a one vote majority in the state senate. We have a rat guv, rat AG, and rat LT guv all of whom are to the left of her thighness. That’s just the reality.

Universal Reciprocity. Liking that concept. Universal— any where you go or anywhere you come from-— reciprocal recognition of your right to carry/own.

This is not a compromise, it is a takeaway, plain and simple.

There was concealed carry reciprocity with a large number of states, which the AG arbitrarily took away. In order to get it back, the Republicans had to agree to expanded background checks. This is not a compromise.
