Trump: In Iowa, 'I Sort of Just Went Through the Motions'
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Donald Trump normally projects the image of a guy with only one gear: warp drive. But on today's Morning Joe, Trump made an interesting admission, saying that in Iowa, "I sort of went through the motions a little bit." According to Trump, he went less than flat-out in the Hawkeye State because he had been told he couldn't win, until a poll at the very end of the campaign indicated that he could.

Note: there was an odd moment at the very beginning of the phone interview. When Mika Brzezinski began by asking "let's talk about Iowa. What happened?" there was an awkward pause on Trump's end. "O-k-a-a-a-y," he eventually responded. The pause was so strange that Joe Scarborough asked "can you hear us?" Trump said he could hear fine, and the interview went on from there. So . . . was Trump distracted, or might he have been annoyed by Mika's entirely reasonable opening question focusing on his second-place finish in Iowa?

Trump says in Iowa “I sort of just went through the motions.”

For real, or convenient excuse?

Sure, Wilbur.

I'm pretty sure you blew a lot of cash on commercials and rallies to 'just go through the motions'.

Trump was simply NOT going to get the vote of the committed Christians. They do not vote for womanizers no matter how much they talk the talk. It is a question of conscience which many will never understand.

He admitted elsewhere that despite the advice of his campaign guys he didn’t take the Cruz ground game seriously and said he won’t make that mistake again.

It’s IA, but Cruz and Rubio did much better with da yuts despite a LOT of polling to the contrary, but, of course, . . . Those were polls, which have proved useless.

I wonder if Cruz stole enough votes from Carson to put him over the top? Cruz won by 6k votes. Does anyone have any idea of how many votes Cruz got by spreading the false story that Carson was dropping out after Iowa?

He definitely didn’t put much money into developing an organization there, that’s for sure. He also tended to fly in, and out rather quickly most of the time. Only in the closing days did he seem to really be putting for an effort. Skipping the debate wasn’t his best idea, but he did manage to raise a lot of money for vets, so there is that. Despite all the shortcomings of his campaign, he did come in 2nd, which was a good showing.

Iowa was a big wakeup call for Trump.

I expect a huge shift in his strategy. He won’t make the same mistake again.

what other candidates do 6:30 am interviews?

the man works 18 hours days for a living and has for over 40 years while the others live off their lifetime government paychecks sitting around doing nothing but running their mouths

if you really want something done don’t vote for politicians

Exactly.

Iowa rejected Reagan in favor of George H. W. Bush.

When they pick someone, you run away from the person.

Iowa picks are always bad news.

I really hope not, else one of the other clowns will win. And all they are is different shades of the same grey. Cruz, Rubio etc... same same same... all establishment guys. Carson isnt.. but then he is not a leader either.

Leadership is what is most lacking in Washington, someone that knows HOW to lead, HOW to organize. Neither of the other guys have a clue... they are all about the same..

Whatever.

These days seeing how many of these types have a life full of all manner of less than stellar crap *cough* the Duggars *cough*, then they can go find some other candidate willing to do their monkey dance.

Stop with the stolen votes crap. Carson made a stupid decision when he didn’t think through the optics. Cruz was only reporting what he heard on CNN. Stolen votes is what Hillary does. Don’t equate this with that.

Cruz, Trump, and Rubio over Clinton and Sanders. Everything else is noise.

>>>He came in second out of 11.<<<

And it was the voting block consisting of those that are Christians NOT in name only that made the difference. I predict this will be true in all the Bible belt states. He may do well in the others.
