Iowa’s Secretary of State Rips Cruz Over Campaign Mailer

WASHINGTON -- Iowa's secretary of state on Saturday blasted Ted Cruz's campaign over a controversial mailer that aims to drive voters to the polls for Monday's caucuses by claiming they have committed "violations."

"Today I was shown a piece of literature from the Cruz for President campaign that misrepresents the role of my office, and worse, misrepresents Iowa election law," Paul Pate, a Republican, said in a statement Saturday.

I hereby urge Donald Trump and all Iowa Trump supporters to bring to your caucus a copy (or better yet, and original) of the following nefarious mailer Cruz mailed out in Iowa and explain during caucus the vile nature of this mailer, including the fact that the "grades" are fradulent because SecState Iowa does not record caucus attendance, as well as the overtly threatening nature of this mailer that concludes with the threat that "A follow-up notice may be issued following Monday's caucuses".

Brings to mind some of the voting ballots across the states that favored candidates.

As much as I like Ted, this was really, REALLY stupid of him.

Had I received something like this in the mail, I would be really, REALLY pissed off.

It’s also a horrible, horrible move by Iowa.
WTH is Iowa doing tracking _AND_PUBLISHING_ individual voter participation records? Maybe not tracking exactly _how_ individuals voted, but tracking anything beyond mere voter registration date is unduly intrusive.

Stupid for Cruz to abuse that information, but that information shouldn’t exist in the first place. Blame Iowa law first.

“That was a horrible, horrible move by Cruz.”

Exactly. It goes against everything he is suppose to stand for. Bad move by Cruz.

Y’all are missing a key point: data mining.

Expect the Left is gathering such information, and correlating it with lots of other databases, to identify EXACTLY who to target for “get out the vote” campaigns. Steffany Hinkeldey only votes half the time? well, we can sure look up that unusual name to discern probable R/D preference, then start sending targeted advertising to persuade her to vote this time around - or, perhaps, send discouraging mailers designed to persuade her to stay home. Couple that with border precincts, existing on the edge between Left-leaning political urban archipelagos and the sea of deep-red rural voters, and you can spend money very effectively to steer election results.

There’s a huge difference in success between a campaign that pays millions to convince whole states when most precincts won’t be persuaded, vs targeting individual voters in swing districts that can push a state’s winner-takes-all-delegates favorably.

So much of this kind of tactic depends on whose payroll you are REALLY on. Regardless, I am surprised at Cruz for this kind of trash.

Go Trump.

I am a Cruz supporter...but I can say without any excuse or preamble that this was a big mistake by Cruz.

People will see and feel “big brother,” all over it...they very thing Cruz is campaigning against.

In addition, it will offend, and then anger them, and they will most likely (if they vote at all), go out and vote against whomever sent such a correspondence.

Cruz has some knuckleheads working for him...or agents working against him.

Does not matter...he himself should have seen how crazy this was and either stopped it...or if he did not find out until later...he should have apologized and fired the people who were responsible.

This will hurt him, particularly in Iowa, but also wherever people hear of it...and you can bet the competition will trumpet it far and wide.

Funny how your spamming the site with the same picture OVER AND OVER reminds me of tactics used by Obama devotees.

Does your "indignation" extend to Rubio, who did the same thing?

The problem with the Cruz mailer is that his campaign invented things that are not even part of what the State of Iowa actually does. No grades or information about neighbors are targeted. Most states list whether registered voters voted, and even details as to whether In Person, Absentee, Provisional, Early, etc. People who are registered to a party are listed as not voting. Sometimes these lists are alphabetical, sometimes by precinct, and some states have computer lists which can be sorted in any number of ways. I have used such lists for targeted mailings. For example urging frequent voters to support a specific candidate and enclosing relevant candidate information. The problem is not the existence or use of such lists but the nasty, threatening content of the Cruz mailer. This link also shows the milder Rubio mailer as well as government info.

Dear Mr Pate: shut up and count the votes.

Your ‘outrage’ is little more than coattail-riding with a view to higher office for yourself.
