Dutch Police Training Eagles to Take Down Drones By Evan Ackerman Posted 1 Feb 2016 | 9:17 GMT

No matter how many regulations the FAA puts in place, drones are cheap enough now that frequent misuse is becoming the norm. There's no good way of dealing with a dangerous drone: you can jam its radios to force it to autoland, or maybe try using an even bigger drone to capture it inside a giant net. In either of these cases, however, you run the risk of having the drone go completely out of control, which is even more dangerous.

Or, you can be like the Dutch National Police, and train eagles to take down drones for you.

I love the idea of this even if it probably won't be put in to wide spread use and it is a rather impressive looking eagle.

This should also scare the dickens out of the moslems... what is the Israels added this to their arsenal of highly trained animals like the attack shark and the spy vulture ?

snickers... ;)

Remember the father who shot down a drone which was being flown by his neighbor and his pals while spying on the fathers daughter as she sun bathed.\?

All this latest tech today has made every whack job, every pervert, and every nosey idiot out there easier to do what they have always wanted to do.

Sounds cruel.

What does attacking those spinning blades do to the trained eagle?

Using an eagle on drones sounds like attacking a Cuisinart food processor with a wing and drumstick.

Cruel, silly humans.

You must be referring to the police and the FEDS?

“There’s no good way of dealing with a dangerous drone”

What damage or injury has a drone done? Control freak government, creating yet another hysteria.

The video, which is in Dutch, mentions about designing a protection system for the birds, also it would probably only be used on smaller drones with little likely hood of any damage.

Eagles normally crash into things, at high speed too.

So now we will be treated to eagles, presumably in little football helmets, and with NFL pads, streaking through the sky to attack fun toys that everyone is convinced terrorists are salivating to use.

Is there a point anymore where anyone can decide that government is utterly off it’s rocker? If a drone is that terrifying to people, how do they get through their day anyway?

Agree. There has to be a technological method of disabling or destroying these machines without resorting to animals as crash test dummies.

An eagle’s natural prey would bite back, they’re well-equipped to handle it and will learn the best approach with practice. I’ve seen red shouldered hawks take rattlesnakes.

It does sound stupid. Why not just armed drones?

And drones fly for what, 15 or 20 minutes max? So what is it? Will a drone be spotted and a van goes careening through the streets to the location to release the eagle to enforce the little special drone no fly zone?

Or will it be like a standby force, widely deployed across the nation, little eagles in readiness, wearing their tiny football helmets like some kind of low rent NORAD, ready to keep us safe in the homeland? I can see them now, sitting in lawn chairs, smoking a cigarette like a spitfire pilot outside the squadron office in the blitz, waiting on that phone to ring again.

Remember, if you see something, say something. Well, I think I see something,,,, oh, nevermind.

They ought to just train them to drop a fish into the middle of the propellers. That would crash it!

Eagles strike prey talons outstreched, their weight stuns the prey while the talons grip. I guess you could call that a crash. ;>)

Search "Eagle attacks drone", A surprising number can be found on various sites. Eagles seem none the worse, just ticked off because:

a not food

b competitor

Bald Eagle talons

Harpy Eagles have the largest talons followed by Goldens, and then Bald Eagles.

Spewing coffee now at the fish drop weapon.
So im walking along enjoying my coffee, when I see a drone fly by.
As I stand there in a panic, wondering if I should flee, stop drop and roll, duck and cover, just say no, or just collapse in terror, an eagle suddenly rolls in and performs a Stuka dive, and drops a herring right into the drone blades.
So I am now covered in fish hash yes, but still I am thankful my government has been so forward thinking as to keep me safe from being photographed outdoors.

Does anybody know if these eagles qualify for veterans benefits when they are old?

And what happens if we do start using eagles and falcons as low end defense tools? Will we have to rename F-16s and 16s?
What happens when you want an F-15 for a Tu-95 and they send a bird, even a very large one? And what about the little drone and someone calls for an eagle?
What would the Russians think when we start intercepting them is such ways? Conversely, an F-15 in a guns kill 50 feet over the sidewalk café is an experience best left to the imagination.

And what about the navy? They are going to want a new dolphin fleet protection program. There’s a lot to think about here.

Yeah, makes one realize that Viking Kirk Douglas got off easy in the movie.
