Statement from (Iowa) Secretary of State Paul Pate Regarding Misleading Mailer from Cruz
Oskaloosa News ^

Posted on 01/30/2016 1:07:24 PM PST by springwater13

Today I was shown a piece of literature from the Cruz for President campaign that misrepresents the role of my office, and worse, misrepresents Iowa election law. Accusing citizens of Iowa of a "voting violation" based on Iowa Caucus participation, or lack thereof, is false representation of an official act. There is no such thing as an election violation related to frequency of voting. Any insinuation or statement to the contrary is wrong and I believe it is not in keeping in the spirit of the Iowa Caucuses.

Additionally, the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office never "grades" voters. Nor does the Secretary of State maintain records related to Iowa Caucus participation. Caucuses are organized and directed by the state political parties, not the Secretary of State, nor local elections officials. Also, the Iowa Secretary of State does not "distribute" voter records. They are available for purchase for political purposes only, under Iowa Code." - Paul D. Pate, Iowa Secretary of State

Denial. It's not just a river in Egypt.

The Cruz campaign confirmed they sent it.

Honestly, I don't think he's a terrible man, but he has made terrible mistakes down the homestretch of this campaign.

This is a doozy.

So, are you saying Cruz does not run a tight ship? That his employees are acting without authorization?

The Old Testament shows us a story of a God alternately very angry and torn with love. The impression of this story to the unfamiliar seems to be that God is just crazy, He can’t figure out what He wants to do, hate you or love you. Of course there was a plan, but we did not comprehend it.

"even in Iowa"

You are correct sir. It's been done before.

And every time it's been used it's been met with derision, and universally so.

And this time a well-respected SoS of a well-respected Governor has made a very public announcement hinting that the mailer is illegal (of course, it's not).

It was inevitable that someday such a tactic would hurt the originator with voters. Not the target voters that the mailer went to (that was well researched to have maximum positive results) would rise up angry.

But that it would become a cause of ridicule by every opposing political entity.

This bone-headed move will be on the front page of every newspaper in the country tomorrow AM. Especially Iowa...along with the SoS decrying "voter intimidation".

This relegates Cruz to 3rd place in Iowa and on life support.

These things are marketed and sold as packages to political campaigns, tested and honed as far as headline, copy, even colors used, all directed at increasing desired response. It’s a product with a history, not a one-off sort of thing that somebody just pulled out of their nether regions. It’s more typically been associated with Democrats, however. I suspect the reaction of recipients has been somewhat different.

Agree. Almost the whole grace dynamic seems to be just missing here.

“Does the general voting public get to vote in a caucus or is it just for people active in the party?”

anyone can go, and in Iowa you can do an instant party affiliation AT the caucus. In Colorado, the caucuses are closed and party affiliation or changes have to be done at least 60 days in advance.

Yeah, maybe I might vote, but not for him. That is the outcome he will get.

All we know for certain is the spokesman admitted he sent it.

Does this mean it was approved and authorized by the campaign?

I am not sure.

I need to hear from Cruz before I will pass judgment.

Well it’s causing a fire storm. The calculators had better be real careful to bring THIS into their calculations here.

NO EXCUSE! You peg yourself as clever, you better be willing to accept the verdict of the consequences.

Can run a tight ship, but sometimes people “go off.”

People are people.

This just lacks respect for personal privacy. I thought conservatives valued privacy? A big no-no for me.

Seems like Cruz is going off the rails a bit. He’s trying too hard to beat Trump. If he can’t beat Trump straight up, why not just stand for what you believe as persuasive authority among the voters? That is a worthwhile effort isn’t it? This makes people like Cruz look like winning and politics is more important than doing the right thing if doing the right thing means you may not win.

More turn off for me on Cruz.

Yes, ma’am! How’d that work out for you?

I recently got a little dutch oven for frying and we’re loving it! Did brined turkey wings earlier in the week and hubs was reminded that I love him! lol.

Seriously, I tend to keep the fat in the pan and he’s using the flavored fat for his morning eggs.

He’s off statins and his cholesterol is down. :)

Questionable call by the Cruz campaign, no doubt. The firestorm of controversy itself is a political campaign, too, though. That’s what I’ve been attempting to point out.

Well, I'm sure he'll be asked about it.

But I certainly wouldn't think this would be sent out without the candidate personally authorizing it. We'll know if he fires his campaign manager.

If not technically a "violation" of the letter of the law, it is UNETHICAL. IMMATURE. A POLITICAL DIRTY TRICK.

Beck and Cruz have shown they have no ethics. "My family doesn't have health insurance," Cruz said, then hours later his spokesman said, oops, yes he does. Just one of dozens of examples.

BECK otoh---Career Shock Jock/Morning Zoo Host. Nothing else to say.
