Trump is Lonesome Rhodes [9/14/15]
The Washington Times ^ | 9/14/15 | Cal Thomas

Rarely and perhaps not in modern times has a presidential campaign more resembled the classic 1957 film, "A Face in the Crowd." Written by Budd Schulberg and starring Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal and Walter Matthau, the storyline follows an Arkansas hayseed named Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes (Griffith), whom Marcia Jeffries (Neal) discovers in a county jail.

Jeffries has a local radio show on which she interviews interesting characters. She finds Rhodes irresistible and puts him on the air. Rhodes becomes a sensation, eventually climbing the ladder to his own network TV show and then, as politicians approach him for endorsements, a self-described kingmaker...

Lonesome Rhodes was dragged out of a jail cell. Donald Trump was dragged out of a 5th Avenue penthouse apartment.

The question is: Is the jail cell vagabond a phony or the real thing? Is the penthouse billionaire a phony or the real thing?

Very disappoint in Cal Thomas for writing such crab. I guess Cal is GOPe too. He had me fooled. Trump is pulling the mask off of all the uniparty agents.

It’s funny you should mention that....I posted almost the very same thing on a thread a couple of weeks back.

If you’d been around here during the 2008 primaries, you’d know that *Huckabee* is Lonesome Rhodes.

Lonesome Rhodes was an uneducated, penniless, homeless Arkansas drifter and con man.

Trump is an educated ignoramus, was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, is a thrice-married philanderer and a con man.

So there are some differences.

I imagine any unimaginative person would see Lonesome Rhodes in any famous person he disagreed with. Doesn’t make it true or accurate.

Besides, he’s funnier in “No Time for Sergeants.”

Stupid. Bill Clinton is the most Lonesome Rhodes character this country ever had.

Trump is some other archetype, but it's not Lonesome Rhodes. Gordon Gecko gone political perhaps.

Trump said, "The people - my people - are so smart, and you know what else they say about my people? The polls! They say I have the most loyal people. Did you ever see that? Where I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters. OK? It's like, incredible."

I’m not sure some of them will be able to vote in the general election after Trump wins. Not because of Trump, but because they will have damaged themselves so much mentally with their deranged obsession, they won’t be able to vote. Thankfully, Trump will expand the voter base so much that he will win anyway.

“I think Trump is doing the same thing to certain elements to certain elements of the right-leaning media,” Limbaugh explained. “People have made the mistake of thinking there are two different and very distinct medias - the drive-bys, the mainstream, and all of us in the whatever you want to call it - new media, conservative media, alternative media. But within that universe of the alternative media, new media, so-called conservative media, there are their own factions. And some of those people have been masquerading as conservative media, masquerading as conservative think tanks or conservative institutions.”

“Trump has come along and for whatever reason flushed out the not-quite-so-conservative conservative media types and their agenda is now exposed,” he continued. “So what has happened here is that agendas are being dragged out of the shadows everywhere, all over the place kicking and screaming. And people are learning that the places they thought were conservative may not be. People they thought were conservative may not be quite as conservative as they thought. Maybe some of them are much more tied to the establishment than they originally thought.”

“Just because we don’t see partisanship doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist,” he added.

I think “touch back trump” is catchier than “lonesome trump.” But there are so many possible monikers for the fraud: “adulterer donald,” “mafioso don,” “phony trump,” “establishment trump,” “pro-abortion trump,” “wealth tax don,” “single-payer trump,” “pied-piper don.” The raw material is nearly endless.

Trump isn't slick, like Gecko. He's very heavy-handed, as with his literal Bible-waving and...

He's painfully transparent.

“Trump is an educated ignoramus, was born with a silver spoon in his mouth”

If you want to disagree with Trump, go ahead. But when you call him an ignoramus you show how don’t understand what is going on.

How many billions of dollars have you made in the difficult real estate and construction business?

Trump has been successful at everything he has done. He is leading in all the polls while spending almost no money. An ignoramus could not do that.

Trump is his own man. He speaks the truth. That is why the establishment hates him. Lonesome Rhodes was controlled by PR consultants and said only what he was told to say.

They are complete opposites.

Trump is motivated by patriotism not personal gain”

ROTFLMAO!

When has Trump been motivated by anything but personal gain? He is more sophisticated than the Lonesome Rhodes character, but both are demagogues and hucksters. Just because one wears a tie and $10K suit ...

You have a point. How anyone can admire this guy is an absolute mystery.

Your Litany of The Donald is pretty impressive.

Trump has faced nothing but difficulty and attacks since he began running for president. Macy’s and others refused to do business with him. NBC dropped his TV show despite high rating. They tried to destroy his successful Miss Universe contest.

The establishment politicians that he was required to contribute to and court to make his business successful have all attacked him. Everyone in the entertainment business, the media and the political establishment has continually attacked him.

But despite this he has stuck to his positions and is trying to make America great again. No other politicians would have stayed true to his principles under the pressure and attacks Trump has been subjected to.

You can disagree with Trump if you want. But you can not deny that he has been courageous and principled in the face of unrelenting attacks. He wants to make America great again.

“I thought Glenn Beck was Lonesome Rhodes.”

Glenn is actually a better fit. No wonder Ted chose to hook up with him and even hand out Teddy Bears to illegals down at the border.
