300 scientists send letter to Congress accusing NOAA of cooking the books on climate change

One of the least reliable sources for data on climate change is the US federal government. Now, a group of 300 scientists and academics want Congress to investigate the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for cooking the books on climate data in order to erase the pause in the rise in temperature cited by, among other sources, the IPCC.

Incredibly, the NOAA accumulated data by measuring the water temperature from the engine intake valves of ocean going cargo ships. The scientists want Congress to investigate whether the agency violated the Data Quality Act, which seeks to insure the accurate dissemination of scientific information to the public.

Daily Caller:

“We, the undersigned, scientists, engineers, economists and others, who have looked carefully into the effects of carbon dioxide released by human activities, wish to record our support for the efforts of the Committee on Science, Space and Technology to ensure that federal agencies complied with federal guidelines that implemented the Data Quality Act,” some 300 scientists, engineers and other experts wrote to Chairman of the House Science Committee, Texas Republican Rep. Lamar Smith.

“In our opinion… NOAA has failed to observe the OMB [Office of Management and Budget] (and its own) guidelines, established in relation to the Data Quality Act.”

The Data Quality Act requires federal agencies like NOAA to “ensure and maximize the quality, objectivity, utility, and integrity of information, including statistical information.”

Smith launched an investigation into NOAA’s study last summer over concerns it was pushed out to bolster President Barack Obama’s political agenda. Democrats and the media have largely opposed the probe into NOAA scientists and political appointees, but Smith is determined to continue investigating. NOAA officials surrendered emails to congressional investigators in December.

I’m guessing the “Data Quality Act” doesn’t apply to the BLS?

Should they now all be drummed out of science?

Settled Science has no room for people who ask questions.

They are lying in order to save the planet, don’t you people understand? These heroes deserve a ticker tape parade.

Lying is good. That’s why the government does it.

Messin’ with the “settled science”

97% IS 97%! Whatever number of scientists you come up with they are within the 3% already established as the outliers. [snark]

You are joking, and yet that is EXACTLY what I think is going on.

They KNOW they are lying (at least those in charge on the left)

BUT, they think they are lying to save the world (not from global warming) but from fossil fuel dependency.

Ironically oil is an all natural product. You would think in any sane world they left would love it.

Once the President begins lying, ignoring laws, and committing criminal acts as a lynchpin of his policy, then the rest of the government may weigh in at will even when the White House has not directed it.

We have a rogue government and it gets worse every day.

Yup. Then the citizens of this country can also begin lying, ignoring laws, and committing criminal acts.

The democrats think they can sow the wind, and not reap the whirlwind.

Good for the goose; good for the gander.

It's an absolute perfect plan....because no matter what happens with climate in the future, there can be absolutely no data that will say support the future climate based on the energy changes we have made in the interest of saving the planet.

And that's because we don't know what the climate would be without those changes.

It's all a money thing.

How do the proponents of Global Warming know it's a "pause?" They can't know that until it starts going up again. After all, it may be a "plateau" before it starts dropping. Calling it a "pause" implies they know it will start going up again.

It's a good post.   Needs to get a lot of attention.

Actually one of the most damning pieces of evidence on this climate warming issue is the actual record of predictions just prior to the North American hurricane season.

Some diligent researcher has been documenting on Wikipedia what the NOAA and a bunch of other weather agencies predicted the number of major storms and hurricanes would be.

The record of prediction has been pretty bad across the last decade.   Perhaps the worst year of prediction was 2013, a highly unusual year when only 2 hurricanes occurred and zero major hurricanes.

The numbers posted below reveal just how bad these guys were at predicting what was going to happen in 2013. We would have been better off just using historical averages rather than hiring these "experts".

Imagine.   If these guys are not smart enough to predict the number of hurricanes that will occur in the next 3 months, how can they possibly predict with any accuracy what global temperatures will be 70 years?!

Have a look at the data...
