Health insurance fines loom as deadline nears

Sunday is the deadline to sign up for health insurance, or else pay a fine. That fine has gone up, causing even more financial stress on the uninsured and those who choose to opt out of health insurance.

"I just cannot afford it in any way, shape, or form right now," 27-year-old Seth Valkonen said when talking about health insurance.

Valkonen chooses to be uninsured by paying a one time fine for not having coverage instead of a monthly premium.

"The penalty is cheaper than the overall total for the entire year," he said,

Already on a tight budget, this year's fine will hit Valkonen and many young people like him, even harder.

In order to get more people to enroll, the fine for not having health insurance nearly doubled from last year up to $695 per person.

"I think it's obscene," he said.

I suppose a lot of us got hands on the 1,000 plus pages but never able to read in a couple days the 2,000 page plus Soetero/Nigerian prince care. Nevertheless our ELECTED leaders and we the people forewarned all and now 2016 is here and the beast is going to eat thousands, maybe millions of people who still have jobs.

Sorry for above comment. The elected officials we voted in voted this bill in. I should not be typing before coffee...apologies. Elected officials( or very few) never read the bill before voting on it as Nancy Ponzi-Pelosi verbalized.

Knowing that Obamacare is on life support you would have to be out of your mind to willingly pay the fine.

White single/divorced men hardest hit.

Example:

Man who is working and making 48K a year (blue collar)
Out of that comes child support at 12K a year
Then comes taxes at around 18K a year
Net income: 18K a yaar

Child support doesn’t qualify as a valid hardship expense as it pertains to Obamacare subsidies (whereas alimony does count)

Meanwhile, the recipient of the child support does not pay taxes on it (the payor does as well as any admin fees for the collection unit) nor does recipient have to claim it as income for the purpose of taxes or getting obamacare subsidies.

I know someone personally in this situation and having to pay $700 on top of in “responsibility fees” whilst still having no health care insurance is insane. Catch 22 is that no way can someone who has a take home pay of 18K can afford health insurance premiums on top of that. A lot of small businesses, the backbone of this country, do not offer medical insurance so it’s roll the dice time.

the young people better wise up.....everything is going to be stacked on their shoulders...

my fil who is 89 this year has probably hacked the system for $200,000 this past year for his multiple problems including knee surgery with extensive pre surgical procedures, then rehab in a nursing home for many weeks and then at home visits, for him to basically sit in his chair and watch tv...

and now, his knee hurts because he fell and he's going to go thru multiple exams again because everyone knows no 89 yro should expect arthritic pain...

so this young fella just better fork it over...

They don’t have to pay it if they don’t get a refund.

The government was smart to tax people stupid enough to use Uncle Sam as a savings account.

My daughters friend who is 22 and still in college full time and served in Afghanistan has a 1k fine looming over his head. I can't tell you what I wished for Obama when he told me the fine amount.

AppyPappy if don't pay isn't the IRS going to ruin your life? They are just going to drop this fine? I understand what you said if you are not getting a refund. So no refund this year and the fine is voided?

No, they can only take it from a tax refund.

Think about what would happen if Obama was taking money from his demographic.

The Obama media only mentions the $695 fee.
They never mention the percentage part of the deal.

Last year, the 1040 just asked if the taxpayer had health insurance. This year, it tells the taxpayer to prove it.
If you can’t prove you had insurance, then the taxpayer is to pay the 2.5% of their income on top of whatever they owe from their regular income. I think it is a percentage of the gross.

The fine is collected by the IRS along with your taxes. When you file your tax return, you either have to lie about having health insurance (never a good idea to lie to the IRS) or the fine will be included in the bottom line for the amount of taxes owed.

If you have a refund coming next year, they will deduct the fine from your refund. If you write the IRS a check for your taxes next year, you will have to short them the amount of the fine and hope that they don't notice.

Most of the sheeple overpay their tax withholding and look forward to getting a refund when they file their taxes. Surprise! No refund for you this year. Here is how much more you owe.

It is purely a coincidence that it is all timed so that the sheeple will not find out how well and truly screwed they are until after the election.

this person I know pays every year; never gets a refund (new york state)

The $700 is just another tax added on to the working white drone.

Yep it’s whichever is higher so the example of average joe making 48K, paying 12K (at least) in matriarchy support, errr I mean “child support” and then 18K taxes on top of it gets to pay almost $1,000 in “responsibility fee” or whatever the phoney baloney name is for it.

If you call up the “navigators” most of whom could not spell their own names if you spotted them the alphabet, they immediately assume that you are a “child” support recipient and cheerfully announce that you don’t have to include that income.

The only mechanism for enforcement is your refund. Make sure you don’t have one coming or I guess STFU be a sucker and let them take it.

The only mechanism for enforcement is your refund.

Supposedly, that is what the statute says. Good luck with that in dealing with the IRS.

Let's say you fill out your tax return next year and do not have health insurance. You either check the box that says no health insurance or you lie. If you check the box that says no health insurance you are then instructed to fill in $695 on line whatever. On the bottom line of your tax return, you show total amount owed of $1,695 (of which $1,000 is regular taxes and $695 is the special Obamacare tax).

So you send in your tax return along with a check for $1,000 and a nice note to the IRS explaining that you are not paying the Obamacare portion of your taxes and that they can pound sand. Do you really think the IRS is going to say, "Gosh, you are right, we can't do anything to collect it, have a nice day."
