Cruz: Trump afraid to defend his record
The Hill ^ | January 27, 2016, 07:52 am | Mark Hensch

Posted on 01/27/2016 8:44:23 AM PST by SoConPubbie

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz said late Tuesday that Donald Trump's fear of defending his record is behind the GOP front-runner's boycott of the next Fox News GOP presidential debate.

"The reality is, the reason Donald is doing this — I actually don't think it's because of [Fox News host] Megyn [Kelly] at all," he said on Fox News's "Hannity."

"I think it's because he's afraid to defend his record, that he knows he can't defend his record, and he's trying to hide from the voters of Iowa," Cruz said six days from the first voting state's caucuses next Monday.

"He's not willing to stand up and explain why he supports Bernie Sanders-style, full-on socialized medicine, expanding ObamaCare so the federal government is in charge of our healthcare," he said, tying Trump with the Democratic presidential contender.

"He can't explain why today he supports taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood," Cruz added.

"He can't explain why he supported Obama's stimulus plan and supported Obama's TARP bail-out of the big banks. He doesn't want to answer those questions, and he refuses to show up."

Cruz argued that Trump's claims of bias from Kelly reveal he is not capable of confronting more powerful public figures.

"If you're afraid of Megyn Kelly, then you're going to be afraid of Hillary Clinton and you're going to be afraid of Vladimir Putin," he said.

"If you're afraid to have anyone ask a question, that does not bode well for what kind of commander in chief you'd make," the Texas lawmaker added.

Trump announced late Tuesday that he is skipping the seventh GOP presidential debate in Des Moines, Iowa, Thursday evening.

Kelly and Trump have publicly sparred since the first debate last August. The outspoken billionaire disliked her questions about his past remarks toward women.

Cruz running off the rails. He should stick with his values and beliefs which are generally pretty solid. He doesn’t do well attacking Trump IMO. His attack here more clearly highlights some of Cruz’s problems with political correctness IMO.

Trump, FOX News, and Megyn Kelly Explained (Master Persuader Series)

Posted January 26th, 2016 @ 8:54pm in #Trump

Donald Trump says he won’t appear at the upcoming debate on FOX if Megyn Kelly is a moderator, and as of this writing, it appears she will be. Some of you asked me how this move by Trump could possibly be a smart thing.

On the 2D playing field, Trump appears petulant and whiney. Maybe narcissistic, fascist, and a little bit of Hitler too. And as FOX cleverly pointed out, negotiating with foreign leaders won’t be easier than Megyn Kelly’s questions.

So Trump loses badly in the second dimension.

Let’s shift to the third dimension and see if the view is different. For starters, tell me what you learned about all the other candidates today.

Nothing?

Trump sucked the oxygen out of the room. Again. And the issue – as always – is something we can jabber about forever. It is jabber-ready by design, so the media and the public will have no time and no brain cycles left to consider his competition.

Admit it – you already think the competition on the Republican side has narrowed to Trump versus Trump. If he stumbles, he loses. If he doesn’t, he wins. But the other candidates and all of their money will not change anything. The presidency is 100% in Trump’s hands to win or lose.

And he hasn’t stumbled (in the 3rd dimension of persuasion) in six months of continuous media attention.

Now keep in mind that one of Trump’s signature moves involves creating situations in which he has two or more paths to win, and no paths to lose. He wins AT THE START by picking his battles.

For example, when Trump warned Iran to return the American prisoners, he won no matter what happened. If Iran released the prisoners, Trump would say he influenced it. They did, and he did. If Iran had delayed, Trump would have used it as yet another reason you need a tough guy to deal with them. He had two paths to winning and no path to losing.

And it is intentional. I have a similar (but far worse) skill set, and I would have made that play as well.

So let’s game out the FOX scenario and see how many ways he can win and how many ways he can lose.

If FOX doesn’t budge, and Trump skips the debate, he will tweet the entire mess like it is Mystery Science Theater 3000

The next day, the news will interject his tweets with their commentary about each participant. Obviously Trump’s tweets would include his usual eyebrow-raising insults and claims, and draw all attention his way. And unlike the people in the debate, he can “twitter-interrupt” them at any point with his counter-punches and clever insults. The media will insert his tweets in just the right place to make their stories compelling.

Interestingly, FOX might have good ratings in that scenario because people would be watching the combined debate plus The Trump Twitter Show to get it all synced up in real time. And people would want to see how FOX handles the lack of Trump. Empty podium?

At about halftime of the debate you might see Trump say it is too boring to watch and sign off for the night. That gives you a data point to see if viewership drops off around then. And it probably would, no matter what he tweets, simply because the novelty of him NOT being there will wear off. Then all you have is a real debate about the real issues. No one wants that. We have better things to do.

Now suppose Trump changes his mind and decides to join the debate even while Megyn Kelly remains. One of two things can happen. Either she asks questions that sound biased, and Trump rips her and FOX News apart on live television – and his poll number go up, or she asks only softball questions and Trump appears to have won that way.

You might be thinking that the real world is messier than that, and Trump is inviting a big risk. For example, Megyn Kelly might get in a zinger. But Trump dodges those with ease. Maybe the public will start siding with a biased TV host, but that seems unlikely. The media is unpopular in general.

Or perhaps a FOX competitor will offer Trump a show of his own for two hours, at the same time, just to be dicks to FOX. Anything can happen, but all paths seem to favor Trump.

Now let’s say you are Donald Trump, the scariest Republican that any Democrat has seen in ages. What is the one best thing he can do to separate himself from the Republican machine and show that he can be a deal-maker for everyone? Answer: Punch FOX News in the mouth. Right in front of you.

Democrats are watching. Trump is framing himself as an enemy of their enemy. (Democrats hate FOX News.)

Trump’s setup here is pure genius. He doesn’t know how it will end, but he is making sure he goes where the odds are deeply in his favor.

That’s a system, not a goal. Once you see the world that way, it makes a lot more sense. Coincidentally, I wrote a book on systems being better than goals.

Update: Trump will skip the debate and host a Wounded Warrior event instead.

That’s the 2D description.

In the third dimension, Trump will be focusing attention on the most American and probably the most diverse group of heroes in the nation while the Festival of Mostly Whiteness rages across town.

That’s your Trump lesson on the power of contrast. Timing is everything. And he gets away with it because you know he thinks it’s funny. Somehow that makes it better.

People keep asking me to demonstrate my lack of bias by pointing out some of Trump’s mistakes. The problem is that Trump has a skill set that absorbs mistakes and turns them into whatever he wants them to be. That’s his system.

I kind of wish Trump would debate Cruz, so Cruz could defend his vote for TPA, Corker bill, his call for a 500% increase in H-1B visas, his call for an increase in immigration, his call to legalize illegals, etc. I think it would be fun to see Cruz stew in his own juices.

So would I.

It'd be fun to watch Trump support his liberal policy positions, stumbling around for words and actually face someone unafraid of his 3rd-grade school yard hot-air bullying tactics.

The "Campaign Conservative" Trump would be reduced to a pile of mush within a matter of minutes if he had to face the principled Consistent Conservative Ted Cruz.

“A long as Trump has to defend his support for demonrats, abortion and unions.”

He was a businessman who never implemented any of those views. And Cruz’s actions, in the Senate, are a matter of a few months ago; Trump’s — years.

"He's not willing to stand up and explain why he supports Bernie Sanders-style, full-on socialized medicine, expanding ObamaCare so the federal government is in charge of our healthcare," he said, tying Trump with the Democratic presidential contender.

That's part of it.

But Trump's actions are completely irrational. He is emotionally driven, like a child. Megyn contradicted him and he is throwing a temper tantrum.

Whether or not Fox backs down, Trump will declare victory and show up on Thursday.

Cruz must be in hog heaven. He actually got a chance to spew some more lies about Trump and didn’t have to pay for the opportunity. Cruz is a small, small man.

Blah, blah, blah, Cruz. Sometimes, I just wish he would be quiet. Don’t get me wrong - I like the guy but I don’t like this fighting back and forth.

The truth is, this debate skipping may help Trump in Iowa because he won’t be attacked left and right just before the voting. Fox News should never have put Megyn Kelly up there because they’ve allowed the debate to be made about her. Anyone who’s paid much attention will know that she’s biased against Trump.

I’ve watched/listened all the GOP debates so far but I’m now leaning against watching what will likely be a boring and poorly watched slugfest.

When Reagan similarly skipped a pre-Iowa debate because of media bias, was he similarly a coward? Or are the facts self-evident, but ever-shifting, in your world view?

Reagan was a conservative, Trump isn't.

Reagan didn't have current liberal positions to defend, nor a horrendous Liberal background to defend.

That's like trying to compare a tire iron with a banana.

Didn't Jeb try similar saber rattling and how did that work out for him. To say Trump is afraid of anyone is absurd. Trump has shown nothing by balls this whole primary. People may not agree with his aggressive style, but most are laughing at the ‘he is afraid’ talking points that Cruz has put out. Whoever is advising Cruz is really in over his head, imo. If it's Cruz calling the shots, good grief, keep him far, far away from the WH.

Then why don't you have similar statements to say about Trump.

Trump started this war, not Cruz.

Absolutely right. Because Trump is a longtime “progressive” who has changed for convenience, and he knows Ted, Marco, and others will pint that out — so he’s taking his ball and stomping home.

You shouldn’t slander the great and powerful Donald! How dare you!

I doesn’t support single payer health care. Oh, wait! He said he did last Spring.

And he doesn’t support tax payer support of Planned Parenthood! Oh yeah, he said he favored it as long as it didn’t go directly for abortion.

And he didn’t support TARP, did he? Well, he did and said he wasn’t big enough.

Yeah, ole Donald is such a strong conservative, isn’t he! Isn’t he??

Typical Cruz-bot — completely evade what Cruz VOTED on and now CAMPAIGNS against his own freaking vote.

Again, again, what part of the following reflects a “consistent conservative”?

I kind of wish Trump would debate Cruz, so Cruz could defend his vote for TPA, Corker bill, his call for a 500% increase in H-1B visas, his call for an increase in immigration, his call to legalize illegals, etc. I think it would be fun to see Cruz stew in his own juices.

Trump should agree to debate Cruz (something in Cruz is known to excel at) as soon as Cruz agrees to negotiate something successfully (something Trump excels at).

Which talent do you think is more consequential to the office of the president?

“He was a businessman who never implemented any of those views.”

So being a businessman is an excuse for supporting the liberal agenda? So if he’s President its ok for him to support the liberal agenda? It would benefit him.

But you’re right, Trumps actions are over years. Years of giving millions to democrats, unions, and enemies of conservatives.

I'm also not pleased with Trump for fighting but Cruz is just lashing out here. He knows he's not speaking totally truthfully here. I think the fact that Cruz doesn't get his birth/citizenship sorted out shows that he's afraid that a court will rule against him. Now who's the one that's afraid?
