'Two Corinthians walk into a bar' -- Ted Cruz offers a Biblical ribbing to Donald Trump
CNN ^ | January 25, 2016 | Theodore Schleifer

Maquoketa, Iowa (CNN)The tail end of Ted Cruz's stump speech Monday was half preacher's pulpit, half standup comedy hour.

Ending his stump speech here at the Jackson County Fairgrounds, Cruz, as always, encouraged Iowans to pray and cited his dose of Scripture -- 2 Corinthians 7:14.

"We are standing on the promises of Second Corinthians, 7:14," he said in the eastern Iowa town, before an untimely interruption.

"Two Corinthians!" a man shouted from the third row...

The article states that Trump made some sort of major Christan faux pas by calling it “two Corinthians” and not “second Corinthians.” Trump then blamed the mistake on his preacher acquaintance.

I am not saying this is a bad thing. Just reporting.

I am Jewish and no more familiar with the book at issue than Trump.

Actually, I don't need to see the video because I'll have to vote for whoever pandering fool wins the nomination.

Ok, so you want a Bill Clinton who pretends to be devout but lies the whole time about it. Seems odd on Free Republics.

People who either don't like the conservative side of social issues or who realize that a strong Christian could never win in this Godless country will always say "I'm voting for president not preacher".

Sounds right to me. (Around 25 years ago, I moved out of the first camp into the second.)

There are a LOT of great preachers/pastors I wouldn't trust with the presidency for the same reason I wouldn't expect anyone to entrust it to me.

One week from tonight, I plan to be caucusing for Cruz.

Speaking of which, I looked up my caucus site today. Turns out it's in Marion. Pity the folks who assume they should go to their usual polling places or to wherever they caucused four years ago. I expect mass confusion. And, I expect (and hope) a majority of those potential first-time caucus-goers who allegedly prefer Trump over Cruz 2-to-1 will either stay home or give up.

(This "special characters" thing on FR is a PITA. Could they at least quit converting our typed straight quotes to curly quotes?)

Feel free to get a 10 year old to help you with this task, but enter the words ‘cruz’ and ‘tithing’ into the google search bar and read to your hearts desire.

Nice snark, but apparently YOUR comprehension falls even short of that 10 year old you mentioned. I don't care how many articles there are that are talking about the issue, my point is that not one of the articles is able to show how much the Cruz family actually gives - and so all of their fake "concern" is based on nothing but their imagination. Even if you look at their tax returns, that does not tell you with certainty what they gave - many people don't report all of their charitable giving, particularly in relationship to their church. They give to God, not to get a tax deduction.

Oh, thank you!

I was quick posting on my phone.

Surprise surprise that CNN would screw it up.

My snark was because I knew where you were going and was irritated that you just didn’t make your point.
I am aware of the point you make and considered it. The totality of Cruz’s campaign makes me think the data is accurate. I like him and will gladly vote for Cruz if he is the candidate.
Sorry about being a wise guy

I believe in God.
I have faith in God.
I support Ted Cruz.
I do not “believe” in any human being.

I agree, some people think it is wrong to ask “Ceasar” for a Tax deduction when it is God’s money, not theirs.

Discuss away. My contention is the cult of personality worship is far more on display by Trump supporters than Cruz supporters.

To post a newsletter, I have scanned or read every single article having to do with the campaigns posted to FR since the end of October -- every one -- and I must respectfully disagree with you on that.

I don't care how many times he's been married, I care that he cheats when he is married.

He has been with Melania 18 years. Yet you posted your claim in the present tense, as if you know he is stil cheating, even though you have not presented any proof. Where is your citation? Do you not believe people can learn and grow? Have you never had a habit of some kind that you finally broke? My relative smoked for 11 years, but quit from a pack a day, and then never had another cigarette from the age of 28 until 71, for instance. Show me one credible article about him cheating at any time in the past 25 years.

Frankly, Trump's religion or lack thereof is not relevant to garnering my vote. It would be better for everyone if the subject was left a private issue and kept off the table....my own perception of his character and relative (we are discussing a human being and a politician to boot) honesty are at issue. Sorry that makes you irate.

We couldn't agree more that it should be a private issue; so why then talk smack and then say, -- oh, hey, I don't care -- but YOU are a crazed fan. You say you don't trust his word, but how about your word? Gleefully tearing donw any of the candidates is only giving ammunition to the Democrats. Neither you nor I has any idea who will be nominated. Seel my tagline.

My concern is FR; obviously Trump can take care of himself. I just wonder, why you would waste time on negativity instead of finding positive things to post about your own preferred candidate and spend your time posting those. Nasty snarks about any of the candidates have been bringing the tone down around FR, and the fact is, either of the top two -- or even one of the others-- could still get the nom. But all the trash talk on FR will still be out there about that candidate -- when the most important consideration is winning against the Democrats. I'm not irate; I'm saddened by the trash talk. I will vote for any of the Republicans.

You remind me of those Democrats who said no one could criticize Bill Clinton's transgressions, as President of the USA.

Not at all true, keyboard warrior. I found Clinton's behavior disgusting, and I was also disgusted when Trump divorced Ivana. But that was 25 years ago; their kids have turned out great, he seems quite well settled down with Number Three, and he's not running for marriage counsleor, Pope, pastor, chaplain or therapist.

Our nation is collapsing economically and is extremely vulnerable. He accurately diagnosed what the problems are and swept aside political correctness to say what needs to be said -- and he said it first. I am looking at his leadership skills, knowlege of markets, negotiating skills, financial independence, high intelligence and communication skills -- not trying to judge his sex life. Why do you care so much about it?

You mean his first wife, not the nude model, right? Actually, I don’t follow him that well. I think on the surface we see what a shallow and corrupt man he is. He’s a phony on all levels.
