Donald Trump Is Not The Solution To GOP Incompetence
The Federalist ^ | 1/23/16 | David Harsanyi

Posted on 01/23/2016 10:09:25 AM PST by TBBT

My colleague Ben Domenech was one of the many smart conservative and libertarians writers who took part in National Review's symposium on Trump. He, like many of the others, offered a measured piece, rationally pointing out the multitude of reasons Donald Trump is neither conservative, principled, nor equipped to be the president. I hope it'll matter.

I did notice, though, as I read through the pieces that I felt far less charitable than most of the writers towards Trump's supporters--perhaps the most sensitive constituency to ever appear in American politics.

Trumpism is an ideology that judges all things on how they interact with Donald Trump. As a result, it is completely disconnected from any cogent philosophy or moral worldview. And though Trump's fans characterize anyone who notes that the word clouds coming out of the candidate's mouth are incoherent platitude-infused puffs of gibberish as snobby, monocle-wearing, America-hating elite, all I'm saying is that if you're shopping around for a dictator, you can do a lot better than Donald Trump.

American politics has become a giant appeal to the base emotions of envy and/or anger--depending on what party you happen to be in. And Republican primary voters are about to bring every liberal fantasy about their regressive, anti-intellectualism, to vivid life. There are many rational people on the right who either justify or are sympathetic to this movement for understandable reasons: They're sick of corruption. Sick of the frauds and the failed promises. Sick of the abuses of the other party. Republicans want their own Obama.

Bull, I’ll bet I am not the only one that finds Trump repulsive on a personal level. But we are still voting for him.

NR included Glenn Beck’s full-blown “Trump is Hitler” piece, and several others written by PO’d neocons who hate Trump because he doesn’t have to come to their trough, and beg for money.

What the author nails is that if you try to raise Trump's substantive positions on issues like entitlements, health care, or subsidies, or to point out his own "yuge" flip-flip on immigration, you generally get nothing other than insults in return. Few of his supporters seem willing to engage on those issues at all.

There isn't a perfect alternative to Trump, but it has gotten to the pint where you can't have even a remotely civil discussion. It's just zealotry at this point.

The only “Guy” who was perfect was nailed to a crucifix 2 millennia ago. We will have to look for someone else not quite so unblemished.

Me too. No one else was calling to get rid of the illegals till he had such a success doing it. Then they all hopped on the band wagon and tried to pretend they were always saying it.

I love seeing the low Jeb numbers :)

Me? I'm just going to continue to support the greatest tool of liberty and decency in American political life: gridlock.

Gridlock worked in the Clinton era because the country had not yet been wrecked and could keep going on momentum. That doesn't apply now.

Trump does not want to raise taxes on the ‘entitlements’ as they call them.

The ‘entitlements’ they are talking about are Social Security and Medicare.

Yes, but your average American Idol watcher thinks he is really cool. That is why they support him. Celebrity is everything these days.

He is the result of the ineffective bloviating of the conservative movement for the past 20 years. People that talked, wrote books, made millions, with the end result being this clusterfrick of a nation.

But we need to vote for another talker so he can be the great conservative martyr president they’ve always wanted. Not that he going to get anything done (goodness knows none of them are even trying to pretend that he will), just that he will go down so that we can rally around the ashes....because reasons.

Trump is the solution to Obama admin, Islamic-democrat-marxist incompetence and GOPe betrayal.

Donald Trump will take the GOPe sellout of the conservative base to a whole new level.

Blather is never a solution to incompetence.

It may obscure it, but it’s not a solution.

Trump is going to reach across the aisle and make deals. That is why he loves Mitch McConnell so much.

Goodness knows I’ve been looking for the series of events Cruz is supposed to engage in to go from barely acknowledged Jr senator of 3 years, to ultimate force in D.C..

I’m watching live Trump’s rally in Iowa this AM and I really liked his spirited defense of Christianity and Christians. No self-righteousness just a good, solid defense of the 240 million people who identify with Christianity and the power such a number gives them. Or should give them if encouraged to do so by a non-hostile government.

As usual, Trump says what needs to be said and says it the way the average person would say it. And THAT is why Trump is going to be the next President of The United States.

I would say that Donald is the spotlight that shines on and highlights the GOPe incompetence and back stabbing it’s base.

I am not a Trump fan but I can hold my nose and vote for him if he is the nominee.
