I Concur with National Review and Principled Conservatives
Redstate ^ | 1/22/16 | Joe Cunningham

Posted on 01/22/2016 7:20:11 AM PST by TBBT

The National Review, the very legacy of William F. Buckley, has put out two hard-hitting pieces regarding the candidacy and possible nomination of Donald J. Trump as the Republican choice for president. While neither piece is going to be very persuasive to the crowd of Trump bandwagoners both among the populace and the media, they are nonetheless a line in the sand regarding unprincipled Republicanism and Conservatism. It is a line where many of us on the Right will make our stand, not because we are part of some great Establishment or RINOs, but because we believe in what we stand for.

In the movie "The Dark Knight Rises," the villain, Bane, tells Batman that he merely adopted the Darkness, while Bane himself was born in it. This holds true for Trump, who has adopted the mantle of conservatism while many of us have been fighting under it for years, if not our whole lives. We have, time and again, fought for what we believe in, pushed candidates who hold the beliefs we do, vetted for them, and even when we lost, we felt accomplished for having done the right thing.

The campaign of Donald J. Trump is a leviathan that needs to be eradicated. It is a nomination that cannot and should not happen, if we are to hold ourselves up as any sort of conservative. We have every right to be angry with Washington D.C., and every right to demand secured borders, but we are not guaranteed that from a man who negotiates his way into power in the business world. Negotiation involves compromise, and soon enough, many of his supporters may come to realize his positions on a wall, freezing Muslim immigration, and competing against China are not final positions, but starting ones.

You mean Dana L., who rabidly defended her family values spokesmodel friend, who was cheating on her serving soldier husband (and they had kids), while she was at conservative conferences? Oh. Ok.

A little more than a week to go for the Iowa Caucuses and the establishment is going bonkers. They’re pulling out all the stops because they know that unless Cruz wins in IA his campaign will be effectively over.

Well, Free Republic has a higher Alexa internet ranking than RedState, so people who do this are using the donors who support FR to also boost RedState.

We have, time and again, fought for what we believe in, pushed candidates who hold the beliefs we do, vetted for them, and even when we lost, we felt accomplished for having done the right thing". What, precisely, have the William F. Cuckley brand of "conservatives" accomplished exactly? They have lost. They lost in 1965 when they let Ted Kennedy irreversibly change the demographic destiny of the United States. I an so sick of listening to "conservatives" argue that all we need to do to win black and Hispanic voters over to their side is to explain to them the holy powers of the original constitution. That's nonsense. Freedom and limited government are not helpful to people who cannot compete in a free economy. Preaching lower tax rates to people who do not pay taxes is never going to sway anyone. Ayn Rand is never going to persuade someone who the Democrats are promising more free shit. Ordered liberty under the constitution is only possible in a society populated by the sorts of people capable (both cognitively and morally) from living and prospering under it. The war was lost in 1965, and "conservatives" have surrendered in every battle since then, from the Reagan amnesty to the infuriating decision on the part of the 2014 GOP House to fully fund Obama's executive amnesty. I am done listening to the cuckservatives. It's time to try something new.

The establishment does not want Cruz to win anywhere else but Iowa. If Cruz wins in Iowa he deflates Trump and that may knock both Trump and Cruz from the front runner status by NH.

But if Trump wins in Iowa and NH - something never done in the history of humanity - then they know its over for the establishment.

Hang in there. I still think that may happen, despite the current hysteria.

GO TRUMP!

GO CRUZ!

Exactly. All those frowning faces on the Fox news screenshot will turn their fire on Cruz if he wins IA.

Well, this should be entertaining.

What they've done is open themselves to scrutiny.

Already we see how Levin is roped into the incestuous liaisons between media commentators/journalists and the money in politics.

Which one of these who preach to us and tell us what we're supposed to think... Who is the next to be exposed as a political whore?

Trump hasn’t been part of the eGOP “scene” in DC and those that have spent their entire lives climbing the social ladder in the eGOP are scared they won’t retain their positions if Trump wins. Period. THAT is why they oppose Trump.

I was surprised at the relationship, I knew Mark favored Cruz, he always had that pure streak. Nevertheless, I do appreciate people calling out their own bias.

I am glad for the NR article because the line up is now so clear. I have left leaning friends who hate Trump with the same vehemence that the NR conservatives are showing. Mostly Trump detractors are upset by his manner. My understanding is that Trump puts this mannerism on stage because it is part of his leverage over the media. I would ask how a businessman with his level of success could stay in business if he showed this brash side to his business partners? Watch for Trump to reign it in as the campaign concludes. It is already happening.

What is interesting is how these two groups are now bedfellows. Of course the prize is the thing. Who is going to be rewarded when the winner is determined? All the chickens are coming home to roost. It is time to take sides. That is my take.

Every day there are multiple articles posted from the Trump haters at Redstate. If some of them contained actually facts, it would be helpful. As it stands, the vast majority are writers just blabbering nonstop of their hatred.

Infuriating that in a year when the Presidency is there for the taking by a real conservative

Who is your 'real' conservative? Why isn't he 'taking it'?

I assume your answer to the first question is Cruz. Well, Cruz was my first choice too. But not only is he NOT taking anything, he is day by day making himself look foolish by playing silly political give-and-take, arguing over who said what and what political aide misinformed him on which vote, etc. etc. etc.

He doesn't look like a real conservative ("I am paying for this microphone, Mr. Green", or "My policy is we win, they lose"). Instead he is hiding from past declarations and various amendment votes, or skipped votes, and all too often he looks like just another sweaty junior senator playing the system, only from the outside rather than from within.

I'll gladly vote for either Cruz or Trump. But it won't have anything to do with the wizened old goats (that means you too Mona) at NR.

They actually believe that THEY have built the conservative movement, whatever they think that means...when we KNOW is is WE who have fought and scrambled and clung to keep even a whisper of true conservatism alive.

Bill Kristol? Piss off! Rick Lowry, you sniveling little punk--go to hell. Erick Erickson--the phrase is 'live off the fat of the land', Erick, not become the fathead of the land! Glen Beck...oh for heaven's sake...the very presence of that desperate over-medicated piglet ought to be enough to send readers running for fresh air.

Yes, it is infuriating that a 'real' conservative isn't there for the taking of the Presidency. But it is no one's fault but the candidates' themselves---yours foremost among them.
