The National Review, the very legacy of William F. Buckley, has put out two hard-hitting pieces regarding the candidacy and possible nomination of Donald J. Trump as the Republican choice for president. While neither piece is going to be very persuasive to the crowd of Trump bandwagoners both among the populace and the media, they are nonetheless a line in the sand regarding unprincipled Republicanism and Conservatism. It is a line where many of us on the Right will make our stand, not because we are part of some great Establishment or RINOs, but because we believe in what we stand for.
In the movie "The Dark Knight Rises," the villain, Bane, tells Batman that he merely adopted the Darkness, while Bane himself was born in it. This holds true for Trump, who has adopted the mantle of conservatism while many of us have been fighting under it for years, if not our whole lives. We have, time and again, fought for what we believe in, pushed candidates who hold the beliefs we do, vetted for them, and even when we lost, we felt accomplished for having done the right thing.
The campaign of Donald J. Trump is a leviathan that needs to be eradicated. It is a nomination that cannot and should not happen, if we are to hold ourselves up as any sort of conservative. We have every right to be angry with Washington D.C., and every right to demand secured borders, but we are not guaranteed that from a man who negotiates his way into power in the business world. Negotiation involves compromise, and soon enough, many of his supporters may come to realize his positions on a wall, freezing Muslim immigration, and competing against China are not final positions, but starting ones.

I haven’t read or subscribed to NR ever since Buckley sided with Carter on the Panama Canal giveaway.
So he is using a comic book movie as his analog for real life? And I am to take him seriously?

Infuriating that in a year when the Presidency is there for the taking by a real conservative, Trump is going to take the nomination. I think at the very least, I think Trump supporters should have an open-enough mind to read this NR collection.
Just heard on KSFO radio that Levin is engaged to a family that includes people working for Cruz while he is also submitting this arguement that he is a principled conservative. If he has those principles, how about full disclosure first and foremost.
Now I wonder how much of the NR principles depend on working for Beck or living in a world that may come apart if a president without strings gets into office.

There is some trickery going on here. NR has proved itself to be GOPe the last few years, and not that it’s any longer relevant, but Buckley was a libertarian who at times pretended to be a conservative.

It has stopped blowhard from going on his show.
Brent Bozell lied, said Buckley didn’t live in New York.
Only thing is Buckley ran for Mayor of New York, think you have to reside there to do that.
Ronald Reagan was a Dem, and Union leader. He went conservative for Goldwater, and then was an insurgent and ran against Ford.
People change. I was raised a Dem and became a Reagan Republican.

Bashing one of our candidate is fodder for the Dems to use in campaign commercial. Bernie is far more cordial to Hillary than you were to Trump, and he is her opponent.

Cruz guy here, but either would be preferable to the Dem ticket.
I believe it's too late at this point to stop him. I not only believe he will win the nomination, but the presidency as well. The folks in flyover country are not only angry, but depressed and exhausted. They feel more and more the system is against them. They are worried about the economy, the culture, law and order, the disregard for anything representing fiscal sanity, ect ect.
It will be interesting to watch his supporters reactions when he starts drifting leftward as is his natural inclination. I've debated the issue of Trump with some here and a few have admitted that him not becoming what they have hoped is a possibility but others will insist he's the next Reagan
