Schumer: Trump 'right on the money' defending NY
The Hill ^ | January 17, 2016 | Peter Sullivan

Posted on 01/17/2016 5:32:50 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is slamming Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz for attacking “New York values" and praising GOP rival Donald Trump for defending his home state.

"I'm a Democrat, but Donald Trump did a very good job defending New York," Schumer told host John Catsimatidis on "The Cats Roundtable" on New York's AM-970 on Sunday.

"I'd like Ted Cruz to go talk about New York values to the firefighters who rushed to the towers on 9/11, and the police and EMTs, to the brave New York police officers who keep our streets safe," he added.

Schumer also noted that Cruz's wife worked for Goldman Sachs.

"Maybe he wants to go to Wall Street and talk about New York values, you know, where his wife worked," Schumer said.

After Cruz attacked Trump this week for representing "New York values," Trump defended himself at Thursday's GOP presidential debate by invoking the city's response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"I think [Cruz] hurt himself and he deserved to, and Trump, gotta give him credit, was right on the money in his response," Schumer said.

Schumer also referred to a New York Daily News front page showing the Statue of Liberty giving Cruz the middle finger.

"He will be now forever on the front page of the Daily News memorialized, because they had the Statue of Liberty, and she made a gesture in Cruz's direction," Schumer said.

As for the Senate, Schumer touted the body's bipartisan work in December, including passage of a transportation bill. Schumer said the work would be a sign of a productive year ahead.

"I think things are going to be a little better in the next 12 months," he said.

Fugedabout it...I went to catholic school in Brooklyn, played stickball on stoops, went to college at Fordham. I don't know the city he paints.

"Fugedabout it", "catholic school in Brooklyn", playing stickball"? In case you haven't noticed, those days are gone. You can hardly find a traditional old-school New York Italian in the city anymore, outside of Staten Island. All of the former neighborhoods are kaput, either transformed into liberal yuppy millennial havens or taken over by hispanics, chinese or middle easterners.

No one really believes that Cruz mocked the NY response during 9-11

Sure they do. The NY news outlets are filled with stories of New Yorkers outraged at the perceived insult.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Does NY, Boston, California, Florida, Vermont, Colorado, Rhode Island, Ohio, Delaware have liberal lunatics, in a word YES. Do they have big mouths and do they strut..YES.
Just like the militant Gay crowd would have you believe they are a majority and activists appear to be everywhere Liberals are full of themselves and need to flaunt their stuff to the world. But the majority of NYers by the numbers work hard, try and do the right thing and help those in trouble. Those firefighters and police at 911 were operating in a NY tradition, they were proud members of our police/firefighting locals. They mostly grew up with NY values, not in a vacuum.

I have traveled in many other English speaking countries from AU/NZ across Canada and the UK. As a native born NYer I have experienced more willingness to go the extra mile for a total stranger in NY city. Native Nyers in my experience are wary but very generous and open minded.

Ah, don’t let the New York pride get to you. Of course they are angry. Why? Cruz poked them with a stick. He expected them to get riled for their own good.

Let the low info-voters squabble.

We’re supposed to be a cut above here in the FREE REPUBLIC FORUM!

We survey the carnage from atop our mighty fortress and plan our future battles. We anticipate backlashes and can agree to disagree with fellow anti-leftists.

Let the uninformed rush around with silly antics while we think like generals.

Let us not think of ourselves as New Yorkers or members of any location.

We ...

are FRiends.

“But only Levin has played that truth and discussed it.”

“that truth”?

Hannity also played it, and it was devious on the part of both. And Levin wrote a book on deception?

The video is 17 years old. Trump has owned up to his previous views on abortion, and that he doesn’t hold those beliefs anymore.

I have met people who explained to me why they changed their beliefs on abortion. One man, who had a four year old daughter, who was the light of his life, was bitter with himself because he had discussed the idea of aborting the baby with his wife, and narrowly changed his mind at the last minute. He said the memory haunted and horrified him.

The point is two Nyers endorsed what he said. Just like being an American is more than being a liberal or a conservative occasionally love of your state/city is more important than your political identifier.

‘Most of these guys are conservative politically: firemen, policemen, construction workers...’

Good point, my FRiend. Let us look upon this back-and-forth as strategists rather than as gladiators.

If Jim endorses Trump over Cruz

Why don't you re-read Jim's post that I linked to. He merely stated he's glad that Trump is destroying the GOPe apparatus, renewing passion and boldness back to politics, and preventing Bush from being immaculated by the party elites.

I don’t know. I still visit my Aunt in Bensonhurst. There are new ethnicites showing up but they still start grocery stores, beauty salons and restaurants, sweep their stoops and have fabulous Christmas light displays. The Hassids are harder to assimilate but gradually the little kindnesses of shoveling someone’s walk, giving complements to children are making bridges. The Italians in many cases have assimilated so they don’t cluster as tightly but I have no trouble finding them.

This video shows why the tens of millions of Trump supporters like him. Trump talks to people like he’s in their living room. Others lecture and talk *at* people in a patronizing way.

so your point is

I don't have "a point," that's the thing.

Because there is no "point" to address. A rally attendant made a flippant comment about VPs and Trump went along with it. It happens all the times spontaneously at rallies and speeches.

If Jim endorses Trump over Cruz, I am out of here and it will be the end of a great site. It would be a betrayal of all the conservative values he has stood for all these years. I haven't seen it yet and don't expect to see it. (but I am surprised so many conservatives are worshipping at the Trump altar, just like Obama robots in 2008 )

Well n00b (joined in 2011 I see), get your opus ready because my tagline does not bode well for you.

I did read it, what makes you think I didn’t?

I am merely saying this is a conservative pro life pro Christian web site. Endorsing Trump over Cruz would be a betrayal to those values.
Endorsing Trump over Hillary obviously would not be.
Are we conservatives or low information voters???

It’s more like, ‘How dare you insult us! See my father here? See my brother? See this medal? This grave?’

But hey, if you want to think that Trump is sleazy, have fun.

FRegards ....

I have traveled in many other English speaking countries from AU/NZ across Canada and the UK. As a native born NYer I have experienced more willingness to go the extra mile for a total stranger in NY city.

That is only because there are so many friggin people in New York City. So obviously there will be some good eggs in the crowd. Most people in New York City these days wouldn't even go so far as to inform a driver that his lights are off (at night of course). I observe this all day long riding my bike around the city: swarms of people walking by a car at a crosswalk with its lights off with no one saying anything.

And if someone can't even do that simple little thing, particularly considering how potentially dangerous that situation can be in a hugely overcrowded city like NY, with so many mindless types crossing busy streets while texting, or otherwise not paying attention, how on earth can we expect they (most here) would lift a finger when it comes to something more serious. In short, "New York Values", these days particularly, suck.

Point well taken. The citizenry isn’t majority libtard but they’ve lived under communist rule their entire lives, it’s cultural, they know nothing different, NYC, Boston, Philly, Providence. An 18 yr old that got to vote for Reagan is 54 now and hasn’t had anyone worth a crap during the entire time in between. Lefty candidates don’t even campaign there, those electoral votes are in the bank every cycle. Folks on FR need to understand that for once, those votes are in play this year. We have to win or make plans to start over somewhere. If we lose - the nation is lost.
