Does Anyone Believe Trump Seriously Cares about Whether Ted Cruz Is a Natural-Born Citizen?
The National Review ^ | January 16, 2016 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 01/16/2016 8:35:06 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Dear Reader (including those of you born in Canada),

I guess we should start there. I find this birther stuff to be a lot like women's prison movies: compelling, entertaining, and totally ridiculous.

Other than the presidency, there's no place in American life where the distinction between "naturalized" and "natural-born" citizenship matters.

But imagine if it did? Imagine that your American-born mother just happened to give birth to you in Canada or Belize while on vacation. Your American-born mom and dad bring you home days later and raise you exactly as they would have had they been in Cleveland the whole time. Now imagine there are also all sorts of jobs you are barred from having. Not only can you not be president, but you can't be, say, a chiropodist or an embalmer. Pick your restrictions: You can't go to certain colleges or you can't get the best ESPN bundle. Americans born abroad can't buy basset hounds. Unless you were born here, you can't get cheese on your hamburger. Whatever. It really doesn't matter.....

Jonah has written some good articles but this one is pathetic. To claim the Constitution matters so little...when it’s the supreme law of the land.

Yes, my dad ran for City council with Buckley, and I worked on Jim’s campaign. (I said in August that we were going to win. Nobody believed me.)

Nontheless, New York is a predominantly liberal state, even more so than it was then. Everyone knows what Cruz meant by New York values, and it has nothing to do with the Buckleys or 9/11.

I think Trump does in fact care to the extent that Trump might actually be considering Cruz as his VP running mate.

Otherwise no, it’s just another tar-baby Trump’s placed into Cruz’s path for Cruz to do battle with and get stuck to. Along with the “New York Values” tar-baby and the undeclared election loans tar-baby.

I humbly submit that none of them are conservatives. If they are, the word has no meaning.

“Cruz is gaining on him in the polls.”

Not any more.

I think so, too, and Cruz may be just a pawn in a larger game.

Yes he does care. And if it’s not on a constitutional basis, he knows this will be an albatross around Cruz’s -or Rubio’s- neck.

And being CIC is not a right. There are very good reasons for the NBC qualifier. Some anchor baby or foreign born is not discriminated against because he cannot be elected President.

“Not any more.”

Trump admitted himself at the debate the reason he’s attack Cruz is because he’s gaining.

How dare you quetion the sainted words of your Golden Haired idol!

“All Trump said was that the democrats would bring it up and sue him and he was right... Its the media making it a big deal”

yep, and all the TDSers here like to pretend like that’s not what happened. This all started from single statement of the issue from Trump a couple of weeks ago.

After that, the media ran wild, which they would have done sooner or later anyway, and it was better to go the sooner router rather than have this bite us in the ass at the last second, which is what the media would have preferred.

I think the rules matter to Trump. That’s why he went after Obama.

Thanks Grampa Dave.
FReeper Grampa Dave perhaps said it best:
If Hiterily gets elected with enough votes in Congress, these will be the good old days.

The purists, who will stay at home because our candidate couldn't walk on water without getting the soles of his Teva's wet will have gifted us with another Clintoon pillaging.

“And if it’s not on a constitutional basis, he knows this will be an albatross around Cruz’s -or Rubio’s- neck.”

Then why three months ago did Trump say without reservation this was a non issue?

Care to spin that one?

Chester A. Arthur, Charles Evans Hughes George Romney, Barry Goldwater, Lowell Weicker and John McCain.

Know what they all have in common?

They were all Republican candidates for President and the Democrats challenged their citizenship. This is not a new trick by the left. Sure wish normally smart people would stop chasing the shiny object.

When does his crack team of private eyes get back from Hawaii with the real birth certificate? Or was that made-up nonsense, too?

Both parents should be US citizens - natural born or naturalized - at the time of the birth for one to be elegible to run for POTUS . Cruz’s father was neither .

I was born in Michigan as well. My father had a job in Flint for a couple years, but he was able to escape.

Vermont isn’t exactly representative of the rest of the country. It leans a little Left would be an understatement.

We also forget that Bernie is in his mid seventies and looks like an unmade bed in his rumpled suites and unkempt hair. Bernie would be easily beaten by ANY of the Republican Candidates and that includes Jim Gilmore. Yes, he is running as well.
