Why I Will Never Vote for Donald Trump
New York Times ^ | January 14, 2016 | Peter Wehner

Posted on 01/14/2016 5:40:21 AM PST by reaganaut1

...

Mr. Trump has no desire to acquaint himself with most issues, let alone master them. He has admitted that he doesn't prepare for debates or study briefing books; he believes such things get in the way of a good performance. No major presidential candidate has ever been quite as disdainful of knowledge, as indifferent to facts, as untroubled by his benightedness.

It is little surprise, then, that many of Mr. Trump's most celebrated pronouncements and promises - to quickly and "humanely" expel 11 million illegal immigrants, to force Mexico to pay for the wall he will build on our southern border, to defeat the Islamic State "very quickly" while as a bonus taking its oil, to bar Muslims from immigrating to the United States - are nativistic pipe dreams and public relations stunts.

Even more disqualifying is Mr. Trump's temperament. He is erratic, inconsistent and unprincipled. He possesses a streak of crudity and cruelty that manifested itself in how he physically mocked a Times journalist with a disability, ridiculed Senator John McCain for being a P.O.W., made a reference to "blood" intended to degrade a female journalist and compared one of his opponents to a child molester.

Mr. Trump's legendary narcissism would be comical were it not dangerous in someone seeking the nation's highest office - as he demonstrated when he showered praise on the brutal, anti-American president of Russia, Vladimir V. Putin, responding to Mr. Putin’s expression of admiration for Mr. Trump.

...

Mr. Trump's virulent combination of ignorance, emotional instability, demagogy, solipsism and vindictiveness would do more than result in a failed presidency; it could very well lead to national catastrophe. The prospect of Donald Trump as commander in chief should send a chill down the spine of every American.

There’s nothing left to fight for. Both parties have destroyed the concept and fact of limited government. There will be no trimming of government never mind the wholesale elimination of departments that is needed. The only way out is to hit bottom and start over. If you are correct about Trump, that is the quickest way to hit bottom. If I am correct, then we will have America’s greatest days ahead of us, albeit still with a fatally flawed government.

Trump operates on the “advisor” model. That can work well if he has the right advisors. He’s made no secret of asking for it.

Cruz may be meeker, which could be to his advantage, but he needs to know what to be bold about, too, and when.

I wrote to my congressman this morning and told him that I will vote for him only if he endorses Ted Cruz.

Otherwise I’ll be voting in college administrative races just to keep my voter registration active.

“I still regret voting for McCain, I should of wrote somebody in. Might do it this time just don’t know yet”

That was my first and last whore vote, where I thought maybe it won’t hurt as bad as think. Boy was I wrong.

In my defense, and I am sure I was not alone in this, there was the hope that he would win, and have the good grace to die in a few days after the inauguration. Lottery ticket mentality I know, but McCain was not the object, but merely a means to a long shot end.

No, the Obama years have been a catastrophe. A Trump (or Cruz) presidency would be the start of a recovery.

It is a good bet that trump will get the nomination, and then we'll have two liberal parties

Liberal in some ways. I have always admitted the Trump is no conservative. But he holds some conservative values personally and will allow others to flourish. We will all be more prosperous, better armed, and able to withstand the onslought of America's many enemies, domestic and foreign.

Funny thing, before Trump came along, Cruz was about as indomitable as it got in DC. Best I can remember, only a few little-known politicians such as Gomert could compare.

It’s unfair to Cruz that this ‘upstart’ jumps in from out of the blue. I hope he sighs in relief and sees the bright side if Trump wins this nomination.

No Trump, No Cruz. Cruz is drafting Trump. If Trump hits the wall then so does Cruz.

Which politician gets it pales with respect to whether we allow a faith revolution to happen among us. Trump could arguably be an open door for the working of this, IF he is being on the level of wanting to “make a deal with America.” A God-revived America could propose quite a deal to Trump. Cruz, already a believer, could be great here, or he could end up interfering through preconceived ideas of faith. Or the Lord may have another blessing in mind for Cruz, for example running interference in the Senate for judicial confirmation issues.

I know I have gotten on a lot of people’s nerves, complaining that I must think I am the holiest person in the world or some such thing. I didn’t know there was even a contest going on for holiest person in the world, but only Jesus could qualify. I can only make a lot of noise about how great the grace of God is. Grace isn’t a chance to let your pride strut as good as it can. Grace takes the place of your pride. It turns life into a love story towards God. And if it made a big difference to me, it’s because I have a huge pride and still am rassling that rascal down in the name of the love of God. And I thank everyone for his/her patience while this is going on.

Anyhow, get a faith transformation in the “We The People” that heads up the Constitution, and suddenly you’ll start to see miracles, including political miracles.

Good assessment. Not sure they will be able to pull that off and not draw steel.

The best hope for the Geriatric Old Plotters is to get those two to destroy each other. That is why I think some of the most rabid trouble makers are Bush-whacks pretending support for one or the other.

I will vote 3rd party if the Republicans destroy the party by choosing trump as the nominee.

I'm sure you said the same thing about Romney and McCain.

I’ve called all of the Reps (w/in TX and outside of) that I’ve supported (phone banks/donations, etc) and told them I’m supporting Trump - as we need a LEADER, not another Jr Senator Lawyer - and I look for them to be supporting him, as well. And, that I’ll no longer support them, if they cannot support Trump.

I’ve returned ALL RNC/GOPe/TEA groups, etc - national and state - donation requests with the same message....and, added to that NO GAMES, NO BACKSTABBING FIXES!
