If Trump is Mentioning Cruz’s Canadian Birth, He Must Know He’s Going to Lose Big in Iowa

Actual Title shortened to fit: If Trump is Mentioning Cruz's Canadian Birth Again Then He Must Know He's Going to Lose Big in Iowa

I am amused that Donald Trump is once again reminding voters that Ted Cruz was born in Canada.

Before speaking at a rally on Monday night in Lowell, Massachusetts, Trump stated, "Republicans are going to have to ask themselves the question: 'Do we want a candidate who could be tied up in court for two years?' That'd be a big problem."

Yet it was only four months ago just as the two were to appear together at a rally on Capitol Hill opposing the Iran nuclear deal when Trump told reporters, "I hear it was checked out by every attorney and every which way and I understand Ted is in fine shape."

There are two ways to explain his statement. First, Trump didn't mean a word of it, but wasn't willing to insult Cruz to his face before the rally. Second, it must be remembered that at the time Trump was leading Cruz in Iowa by a 3-1 margin. Last September, Cruz was polling at 9% in Iowa.

Needless to say things have changed. It's been awhile since a poll has come out of Iowa, but I'm Trump's people are doing their own internal polling and he's probably doing very badly. Trump is afraid of being embarrassed by Cruz in Iowa. Why else would he suddenly now give a damn about Cruz being born in Canada when he wasn't 4 months ago?

Iowa has a decent record of picking the top two.

I do know many people who support Trump but are afraid of stating so.

EXACTLY! And deal with as many negatives during the primaries as possible to free up attacks in the general against Hillary. Plus what Trump is doing now is gining up free media in the process for his VP choice.

I do not see the big deal if Trump loses Iowa. There are only 49 states to go where he is on top.

In light of the coming all out assault, I propose the following drinking game. Here are the triggers:

A Cruz supporter has to mention the Donald's past rat pronouncements.

Trump supporters have to mention the birth certificate.

A Cruz supporter (CS from now on) has to bring up Trump's (T from now on) flip flops.

A Trump supporter (TS from now on) needs to bring up the Cruz (C from now on) flip flops.

CS has to pronounce Trump a flaming liberal.

TS then calls C an amnesty supporter.

CS then calls T a three month conservative.

TS calls C a GOPe lackey.

CS calls T a GOPe lackey.

TS calls C a Bildeburger clone who loves Goldman Sachs and loves the CFR.

CS calls T a Hillary supporter who wants her to win, and our only chance is C.

Wait, wait, there's more.........I could do about twenty of these, but I'm fast forwarding to the next phase:

TS calls CS a douche for believing that C is an actual conservative.TS calls CS a moron for not seeing just who it is that's the fighter here.

CS calls TS an idiot for wanting another Romney.

THIS GOES ON FOR SIX WEEKS.

THERE ARE MANY WHO RIDE THE LIGHTNING.

One of them finally wins.......

Peace is made......sort of.......

Mk and Ls vote from their psych wards.

“Going after Cruz makes Trump look nasty. This is the kind of thing Obama and the Clintons do.”

Nonsense. Trump hasn’t “gone after Cruz” at all. He’s simply pointed out a problem the Cruz obviously has, and told him what he needs to do to make the issue go away.

And even if he HAD “gone after Cruz” - so what? They’re political rivals! Do we really want to live in an age where you’re not allowed to criticize your opponent? Personally, I had enough of that with McCain’s “you have no reason to fear Obama” and that kind of squishy blather.

Personally, I believe Trump when he says he likes Cruz - in fact, he’s said it over and over again. I could see him listening intently at one of the debates when Cruz was giving an answer, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump pegged Cruz to be his running mate. The thing is, in order to do that, Cruz CAN’T have the cloud of citizenship hanging over his head. So, once AGAIN, Trump’s right - the courts should rule on the matter once and for all, and do it quickly so the issue can either disqualify Cruz or go away.

*************

They’ll have to say so on caucus night if they expect to give him the Iowa nomination vote.

No telling what Trump has in mind to encourage them to go to the caucuses. He may have planes
all over the airspace if the weather is good enough trailing banners asking people to go to
the caucus and support him.

LOL. I’d play along but I’d be afraid I’d wind up in Betty Ford at the end of the primary season.

Trump is now equal with Cruz in Iowa no longer behind.

Look for Trump to surge by 5-10% right before the caucuses open.

The msm does not want to be viewed as total liars.

You stated this very well. I’m cynical enough to believe the whole birther issue is plan between trump and cruz to garner a bunch of free media putting their faces all over the place and taking an issue away from the dems/socialists.

I agree. If Trump cannot attack Cruz on substance he should not attack.

I agree. It's part of the rough and tumble of the political process where competitors aren't judged on how "nice" they are to each other.

Trump is putting Cruz in the fire now for several reasons. First, it is dramatically raising his level of press exposure to Trumpian levels. Second, it is diffusing what would otherwise be a wedge issue that the Democrats would most certainly use if Cruz is on the ticket in either position. And third, he's testing the character of the man under fire. If Cruz comes through this unscathed, a Trump/Cruz ticket is all but assured of victory. If he stumbles, then Cruz will find another role to play off the ticket.

This also has the effect of continuing to suck the oxygen out of every other campaign's efforts to gain press attention.

Who won Iowa in 2012... I should know but I can’t remember.

Surely Trump is aware that Iowa seems to have no lasting consequence in the nomination process.

That being so, why is he letting Cruz’s polling in Iowa panic him. Okay, you say he’s not panicking ... but for some reason he changed his behavior toward Cruz and is pushing hard and daily for people to beware of a candidate who may be tied up in court on legal issues.

Only the most ardent Trump supporters cling to the theory that this is a favor to Cruz. It is not. It’s designed to cost him votes and it may do so.

To me it illustrates something we already should have known. In spite of his affable behavior in public and the fact that he seems like a decent guy in his private life also, Trump cannot stand to lose. Maybe that’s good.

But don’t insult us by claiming he is pushing this issue to help Cruz.

Latest Iowa poll (NYT) has Cruz and Trump tied at 27%.

Most interesting tab is Trump at 50% support among blacks!!!

And women, who are supposed to hate him, support him at the same level as men.

I have gathered some anecdotal information from truck docks all around the country. Black and Latino men will NOT vote for a woman as President, period.

If trump is behind, his highlighting the circumstances of Cruz’s birth won’t hurt him.

[ Trump also used to be for abortion and homosexual fag marriage, not sure were he stands on fag marriage today.]

Have you bothered to watch the news or read a newspaper lately??

There are more critical issues at hand than gay marriage or abortion. Like if ISIS will chop your head off, overrun by Mexicans, or if we will be in the economic toliet.

Sorry, but Donald Trump is far more qualified to handle such matters. Gay marriage and abortion can be addressed once we secure our nation again.

[That being so, why is he letting Cruz’s polling in Iowa panic him. ]

Because the media would use a Trump IA loss as a hammer to continually hit him over the head through the rest of the primary, and he’s trying to prevent that.

You seem to contradict yourself. Iowa is of little or no consequence. But then when Ronald Reagan lost in Iowa (of little or no consequence), he shook up his whole campaign, fired Sears, brought in Casey and apparently developed new strategy.

So is it important, not important or just a signal?
