Americans will find it more difficult to discover where their meat has come from after Congress announced it would be scrapping labelling laws.
After more than a decade of wrangling, it was decided to axe the law which required retailers to include the animal's country of origin on packages of red meat.
It's a major victory for the meat industry, which has fought the law in Congress and the courts since early 2000.

Sickening... If you read the article this is due to Congress giving in to the WTO. America was strong-armed into hiding where our food is coming from. It is not coincidental this comes at exactly the same time they want to import chicken and pork from China.

How much did the ‘meat industry’ pay congressmen for this favor?

I’m getting my meat from reliable local sources from now on.

Nice. Regulate everything else you eat, see, do, or think about and that’s just fine. Try to inform people what kind of food and where it comes from and the asshats wrap themselves in the rhetoric of freedom, mom and apple pie (of unknown origin).

But fast-food restaurants have to label every last pickle.

Just start buying your meat locally. And ask your meat dept guy where they get their meat. If they won’t tell which is unlikely then don’t buy it. If we don’t know where its from we leave it on the shelf.

I haven’t been able to discern if “no” beef or pork can be labelled with country information, of only that by major meat packers.
I can’t imagine local farmers being banned from saying they grew their beef in the US. It just makes no sense.

Will we know if the meat is halal?

I already raise my own chickens and hogs. My daughter and SIL will shortly be going in on a calf.

I do. I found a place here and been using them for about a year. Very happy with the product, but we’re the exception. I don’t like the loss of sovereignty though.

No one is banned from doing it, but they are no longer required. I would THINK, labeling your meat from the USA would be a big positive, but so many people buy the cheapest meat they can many of the low end retailers will not bother.

We're retired but raise Angus beef cattle. We just put our first fattened steer up in the freezer just before Christmas.
His rib eyes are going to be so juicy.

It is against the Christian faith to eat meat that is sacrificed to idols. Where is the outcry of the church?
