Wayne Rogers, Trapper John on 'M*A*S*H*,' dies at 82.

LOS ANGELES – Wayne Rogers, whose Trapper John McIntyre alongside Alan Alda's Hawkeye Pierce brought mischief, martinis and meatball surgery to the masses in the 1970s every week on "M.A.S.H.," has died.

The actor was surrounded by family when he died Thursday in Los Angeles of complications from pneumonia at age 82, his publicist and longtime friend Rona Menashe told The Associated Press.

Rogers' army surgeon Trapper John was one of the most beloved characters -- and half of one of the most beloved duos -- in TV history, despite the actor's appearing in only the first three of the show's 11 seasons on CBS.

The two skilled doctors, Hawkeye and Trapper, blew off steam between surgeries pulling pranks, romancing nurses and tormenting their tent-mate Frank Burns, with a seemingly endless supply of booze and one-liners at the ready.

Wayne lost his temper with a young female financial advisor while on Fox News. He was so cranky that day he told her to SHUT HER MOUTH. Wayne was then taken off that program. Did he ever return to the money show?

Fiscal conservative but liberal on social issues.

Re: “complications from pneumonia at age 82”

I got my old age pneumonia shot last year.

Anyone know the failure rate for that vaccine?

I was shocked to learn that the shingles vaccine is only 50% effective.

Wow, I never heard that. He seemed usually pretty even tempered.

" The show took a decided left turn with his replacement Mike Farrel. "

Or one might say that Mike Farrel came onto the show after Alan Alda, the communist dictator that he was/is, decided he wanted a sidekick more in his own image and had Wayne Rogers fired and brought in Ferrel, whom he had no doubt already lined up for the gig.

End result, a show that some of us didn't care for because Alan Alda was insufferable enough all by himself, became exponentially worse with him and his lackey.

It was nice to see Wayne Rogers living well and talking about real life when seen in the media. He was a better man than many... RIP.

He was far from the stereotypical Hollywood d-bag

I was referring to Alda, in Post #3, NOT Rodgers. I liked Rodger; sorry to see him gone.

Alda’s constant, high-pitched yapping drove me nuts. He and Phil Donahue are responsible for the wimpification of the American male.

He was always going after Jonathan Hoenig, even when they mostly agreed on the issue under discussion. Hoenig would get this bewildered look, and then just let Rodgers vent.

No, Wayne wanted out because he wanted to do a Dashiell Hammett-style show, and eventually got "City of Angels", which wasn't bad but got canned quickly (13); a longer run than McLean Stevenson's "Show" (12) but not as long as McLean's godawful "Hello, Larry" (35) -- all three NBC!

Rogers was on the Cavuto show a few weeks ago, after a lengthy absence. I thought he had aged 15 years in two months. He had always looked much younger than his age, so I was shocked and thought at the time that he must have had some serious medical problem.

Oops, Rogers and Hoenig were on the 11:30 show, not Cavuto’s; I think it’s called Cashiin’ In.

Indeed, they were.

I remember when women were all goofy over Alda.

Bleah.

At that point in time, I thought Eastwood was the ultimate man.

Go figure.

:)

If that was the cause of him getting bounced off the show, I’m surprised someone didn’t take him aside and have ‘that talk’ before the breakpoint came. Or maybe they did, and Rodgers just wouldn’t let go of it.

MASH was leftist anti-Vietnam War propaganda.

I think we can all agree on that.
