How Donald Trump destroyed the Republican Party in 2015
The Washington Post ^ | 12-29-15 | Eugene Robinson

Posted on 12/29/2015 11:16:25 AM PST by Gandalf the Mauve

History will remember 2015 as the year when The Republican Party As We Knew It was destroyed by Donald Trump. An entity called the GOP will survive — but can never be the same.

Am I overstating Trump's impact, given that not a single vote has been cast? Hardly. I'm not sure it's possible to exaggerate how the Trump phenomenon has torn the party apart, revealing a chasm between establishment and base that is far too wide to bridge with stale Reagan-era rhetoric. Can you picture the Trump legions meekly falling in line behind Jeb Bush or Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.)? I can't either.

Trump didn't blow up the party on his own. He had help from a field of presidential contenders that was touted as deep and talented but proved shallow and wanting. Bush raised shock-and-awe money but turns out to lack his father and brother's skill at performing on the national stage; he seems to want to be crowned, not elected. Rubio is like the teacher's pet who speaks eloquently in class but doesn't do his homework. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was slow off the mark, perhaps having been stuck in traffic on the George Washington Bridge.

Who else would be acceptable to the GOP establishment?...

How Donald Trump destroyed the Republican Party in 2015

As an anti-establishment Republican, though not inclined to vote for Trump in the GOP primary, I am just darn plain sick and tired of lefty 'Rats, like Eugene Robinson of the WaPo here, telling Republicans what way to go in the Republican presidential nomination race.

It's very hypocritical for someone who obviously wants to see Republicans defeated to bemoan the Republicans' purported destruction. The intuitive guess here is that Robinson and his leftist political comrades are fearful of a new brand of Republicanism which might be much tougher for HRC to defeat than, say, the establishment likes of Jeb Bush and John Kasich.

Well, that's what these libs do day in and day out, offer us "advice" on how to win, which always comes down to copying them.

Eugene Robinson's a good man - but that phony baloney ‘concern’ for Republicans is bullsh*t. Shame on Robinson...

This is the kind of stuff we expect from shallow women reporters who are so full of their hatred for Conservatives that they attempt to mask it with the drama of ‘great concern’ for Republicans. It's dreadful. Disgraceful and waaaaay beneath Eugene Robinson.

I laugh at that also.

When the W.P. is on your side, switch sides.

If they’re trashing you, you’re on the right track.

The Left is just trying to help us not make a mistake. Suuuuuuuuure.

Trump should make sure that the Washington Compost reporters, interviewers or photographers are barred from getting anywhere near him from now on.

When he is president, they should be assigned desks in the coat room.

They're all a bunch of closet pansies and marxists at the Post anyhow....just like at the NYSlimes.

The GOP destroyed themselves by pissing on “We the People + “For the People” . That Establishment is totally out of touch with the silent majority. They don’t need help from Trump to drive the party in the gutter!!!

Eugene Robinson is a nut. I stopped reading anything written by him back in the 1990s. Every thing that comes out of his mouth is utter drivel. His opinion is not worthy of any consideration.

Donald Trump has done more for the Republican party than anybody save Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan. Even if he is never nominated he has taught conservative Republicans to stand up and fight back against the liberal press and establishment.

I have been excited to see Ted Cruz doing as well as he is but if Trump wins the nomination It will be easier for me to vote for him than it was for either Bush.

The likes of McConnell and Ryan have got to go, they should switch to Democrat.

Just about the only R candidates I think Hillary could beat are Jeb Christie and Kasich. Hillary’s people see trump leading now so they try to undermine him. If Popeye were leading the R race, Hilary’s people would be attacking him

Well, that's what these libs do day in and day out, offer us "advice" on how to win, which always comes down to copying them.

Well, taking their "advice" is generally suicidal for the Republican Party, which is exactly why the left even offers it. The GOPe in Washington, though, hasn't seen through the ruse very much. Hence the discontentment on the part of so many grassroots Republicans and independents.

Donald Trump is a builder. If he buys a property with shaky flaky foundations he takes a wrecking ball to it and flattens it. He clears all the debris and he builds something that substantially improves value.

The GOP has no value to Main street as is. Trump is crushing it with the wrecking ball. This is all according to plan. Then we build something to our liking on Main Street.
