France's far-right National Front is set to score huge gains in regional elections on Sunday, redrawing the political landscape of the euro zone's second-biggest economy as it gears up for the next presidential election in 2017.

The anti-immigration, anti-Europe party, boosted by fears over the refugee crisis and the Nov.13 Islamic State attacks that killed 130 in Paris, is seen leading in the first round on Dec. 6 in six out of 13 regions, a survey by Ipsos pollsters showed on Thursday.

The party, known by its initials FN, has become increasingly popular since Marine Le Pen took over the leadership from her father in 2011. It does not govern any region now, but a series of opinion polls shows it is likely to win one, maybe more, in a run-off on Dec. 13.......

Interesting how "leftist" France has an explicitly anti-multiculturalist party that has been consistently getting at least 20% of the vote for about the last 10-20 years, while we're stuck with open borders advocates who call themselves conservatives in the Republican Party. How long before Jorge Prescott (Jeb's son) gets inflicted on us by the RNC in a Presidential primary? I'm guessing another 12 years.

Trump is about as close as it has gotten to that here. It’s why he is where he is in the polls. And why so many on the right would just as soon see the Republican Party die, the sooner the better.

The National Front party of Jean-Mare le Pen, his daughter, mand niece are called “extreme far right” by the media, but there is nothing conservative about them.
They are, as their name implies, National Socialists, with strong connections to the nei-Nazi movements all over Europe.
Yes, they hate immigrants, all immigrants, are extremely xenophobic, and hate the USA. They do not challenge the socialist welfare state, just want it only for the French. They don’t believe in free speech, the right of citizens to bear arms. They don’t walk the walk..... MLP lives with a man to whom she is not married, has been divorced twice~ in short, she does not support families and family values.
Add to that their overt anti-semitism and Anti-Israel sentiments, they are not what many here think they are.
They have no answer to France’s economic and social problems.

Jean-Marie was kicked out of the party, it’s no longer his party.

In a sense, you’re correct. It was done for tactical reasons, but it is still his party. The infighting in the family has disgusted many old time members and supporters of JMLP. The truth is, he’s still out there, and neither MLP or baby Le Pen can win without his supporters.
These regional elections are meaningless from a governing point of view, but they will give the FN added legitimacy if they win.

I think your question is a prescient one. “Far right” is moderate in historical terms, while what passes for “moderate” today is in fact quite radical through historical lenses.

I don’t trust Cameron to do the right thing. He has the lunatic Prince Charles breathing down his neck.

Cincinna! It’s so great to see you on FR again! :D

I saw this article and immediately thought of you. I wanted to ping you but I feared you had gone.

This ping is most welcome. We need to get the word out :)

Correct.

Neofascism is not conservatism.

The National Front is rigorously statist - Jean-Marie Le Pen was a Vichyist.

Marine Le Pen is a nationalist, not a neo-Nazi. France would be far better off with her in charge.

Please do your research! MLP is a national socialist, a big government statist who believes in the gigantic welfare state, is anti American, anti capitalist. She has no real plan to run France, no plans for fundamental structural change that is needed.
Sarkozy has a far greater vision for France, and the intellectual wherewithal and a spine of steel to implement it, and deal with the problems France and western civilization are facing.

I have done my research. First, in Europe, you can say the same thing about most of the parties, even so-called Conservatives in the UK. The welfare state exists everywhere in Europe and has the strong support of the populace. Le Pen is no more of a statist than Cameron.

Second, it is commonplace in Europe to attack nationalists as neo-Nazis. The rise of nationalism can be directly attributed to the failure of the EU. Resistance is growing to the bureaucracy in Brussels that dictates rules and regulations that trump sovereignty and the will of the people. The recent migration crisis has reinforced those feelings of frustration and anger. The free movement of people within the EU has allowed terrorists and unwanted migrants to enter their countries. Germany can invite millions into the country, but other countries don't want them transiting their country.

Third, the National Front is not against capitalism per se, but it is against unfair trade agreements, globalism, and the EU. Marine Le Pen has advocated that France should leave the euro (along with Spain, Greece and Portugal). She also wants to reintroduce customs borders and has campaigned against allowing dual citizenship. Jean Monnet laid out the failed vision of a United States of Europe. Europe is now faced with the problems created by the implementation of that vision via the EU.

Sarkozy has a far greater vision for France, and the intellectual wherewithal and a spine of steel to implement it, and deal with the problems France and western civilization are facing.

He had his shot. What did that achieve?

Globally all of France
FN 27
UMP LR 27
PS 24
There will be a second round everywhere. FN didn’t get 50% in any region.

Sarko speaking now about 49% abstention rate. Calling on all to vote in round 2. All that want alternance and real change. Refuses any accommodation... refusing all fusion with anti democratic, anti republican candidates. Asking people to
Vote for candidates of les Republicains (former UMP).
The socialists lost everything everywhere. Took an historic shellacking.
Marine now railing and name calling . She personally got only 49.3% in her region. She, too, will have a runoff.

Why is she railing? Is she saying the election was fixed? Or just upset because she underperformed.
