Reporter asks Ted Cruz four times: “How do you define amnesty?”

The best part is when she asks the obvious follow-up -- is a path to legalization "amnesty"? -- and he won't even make eye contact.

There's a spectrum of answers to this question on the right, of course:

1. Amnesty is citizenship without preconditions. That's the strictest definition, and naturally the one preferred by Beltway Republicans like Marco Rubio in his Gang of Eight days. (Marco Rubio circa 2010 had a different view.) As long as you're forcing illegals to jump through some sort of hoop, be it learning English, paying back taxes, going to the back of the line, etc, that's not amnesty -- even if you're granting them citizenship. Anything short of immediate voting rights for illegals, no questions asked, is A-OK.

2. Amnesty is citizenship. That's Jeb Bush's position, as I understand it. Jeb will legalize 'em, let 'em stay in the U.S. and work, but allowing them to become full citizens with voting rights goes too far in rewarding them for breaking our laws. The most an illegal can aspire to be is a permanent legal resident. Beyond that lies amnesty.

3. Amnesty is legalization unless you've improved security first. That's Ted Cruz's position (and Marco Rubio's current position), again as I understand it. This isn't so much a literal definition of "amnesty," which is a matter of legal status, as it is a political compromise between the two prongs of comprehensive immigration reform. Legalization (i.e. work permits) is on the table if and only if we see concrete improvements in internal enforcement first. Border hawks got suckered in 1986 by accepting promises of future border security in return for immediate grants of amnesty; despite the Gang of Eight's best efforts, they won't get suckered again.

The second time Bush ran I recall Bush supporters telling people not to bring up the borders, amnesty or illegals until AFTER the election as there would be plenty of time to address that once he was elected.

I’m dead serious. No joke.

Maybe Cruz is just showing “unpredictability” like Trump!!

Trump....
On Fox News Sunday” this morning when Chris Wallace asked him about how he’d use the debt limit. Pushed, he used the magic word again: “I do not want to say that because I want to show unpredictability. You have to. You can’t just go around and say that.”

Precisely, Onyx. You can't say that the majority of criminals are Democrats, then be coy about "a path to citizenship" for millions of undocumented Democrats ............C'mon Ted: Come to the dark side photo: Come To The Dark Side ComeToTheDarkSide-WeHaveCookies_000.jpg She says hey babe, take a walk on the wild side Said hey babe, take a walk on the wild side And the colored girls go Doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo...

That’s right. It has nothing to do with granting of citizenship.

Yep, yep, yep and yep. Ted Cruz is a fraud.

No right thinking person, (so called) conservative, Senator or not would vote away his constitutional right in favor of unconstitutional power to ANYONE. Least of all a known anti-American like Obama

Not to mention proposing amendments to the Gang of 8 bill, then lie about why he proposed them. Was he planning on not voting for the bill if his amendments were approved?

He's a major lying fraud and is as much a RINO/liberal as the rest of the Koch heads in DC.

Do they ask sanders/clinton the same questions?

Are you kidding?

They get questions like.. "what is your favorite of the cities you visited?"

As long as you're forcing illegals to jump through some sort of hoop, be it learning English

A good portion of Mexican-Americans who have been here for generations can barely speak understandable English, much less read or write it, so does anyone seriously think that millions of illegals will put in the effort required to do so?

Immigration is not a predictability issue. You are either going to get rid of the illegals or you are going to let them stay. Telegraphing your intentions is not a problem. Its a must.

Cruz Pac received $36 million from pro-Amnesty rich donor Robert Mercer. Why blame Cruz for supporting path to legalization? Blame his rich donor! Haha

Debt and massive illegal criminal invasion during war time are two different things completely. That's like saying since your wife did not want to discuss her spending, you refuse to discuss millions breaking into your home illegally and looting it.

We all know Trump runs a tight ship financially and fires those who waste or don't perform. With Trump, there is little argument he is the best person of turn around America financially and militarily. Get real.

the "good" ones are going to come right back in legally once they've been removed.

I'd guess, in reality, once you're on the outside, it may be awhile before you get back in.

He may even be insinuating that they will get back in by first standing in line with the others already applying for citizenship.

Trump as a businessman has never run any kind of "give away" show.

And btw, securing our borders would free up hundreds of billions in legal, criminal, medical and handouts costs for tens of millions here illegally.

Remind me again how many times Sessions has filibustered an omnibus bill to prevent amnesty. How many times as Sessions called out the leadership?

The second time Bush ran I recall Bush supporters telling people not to bring up the borders, amnesty or illegals until AFTER the election as there would be plenty of time to address that once he was elected.

But it was brought up during the domestic policy debate with Kerry in 2004. And W came out definitely against amnesty, saying it would reward illegal behavior and we couldn't do that. Kerry was for amnesty.

From the 2004 domestic policy debate, W said:

Now, it's very important for our citizens to also know that I don't believe we ought to have amnesty. I don't think we ought to reward illegal behavior. There are plenty of people standing in line to become a citizen. And we ought not to crowd these people ahead of them in line.

If they want to become a citizen, they can stand in line, too.

And here is where my opponent and I differ. In September 2003, he supported amnesty for illegal aliens.

Good old honest W.

Right hand column, question #12.

For one thing, we don’t have to pay to deport them all. Under Operation Wetback, 25% were deported and 75% left on their own.

And the huge difference between Trump’s and Cruz’ plan is Trump gets to choose who comes back in. Those with skills we need most likely. They also get to compete with those waiting in line, not push ahead of them. With Cruz everybody gets to stay and those waiting don’t get a chance. And we don’t get any control over who is here.

That is amnesty. Trump’s is not - they have to leave.

Really? Where’s that link? Or did Cruz just say that to take the ‘middle of the road’?
